## What it does

The skill covers how gameplay C++ spawns and controls Niagara effects. It documents `UNiagaraFunctionLibrary` and `UNiagaraComponent`: one-shot spawns with `SpawnSystemAtLocation`, attached effects with `SpawnSystemAttached`, and owning a component directly when an effect repeats on a single actor. Lifecycle calls like activate, reset and pause are in there too.

Separate sections handle User parameters, data interfaces, Niagara Data Channels for gameplay events, completion callbacks and simulation caches. A routing table maps a request to the right section, and deprecated API forms are collected in one place. The target engine is UE 5.8, so on older versions some calls will not compile — check the signatures against your own headers before trusting the snippet.

For the code to build, add `"Niagara"` to your module's `PublicDependencyModuleNames`, and `"NiagaraCore"` if you subclass `UNiagaraDataInterface`. Spawning returns `nullptr` on dedicated servers and when the pre-cull check rejects it, so null-check every result.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-niagara-effects -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-niagara-effects/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-niagara-effects/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-niagara-effects -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-niagara-effects/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-niagara-effects -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-niagara-effects/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-niagara-effects
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-niagara-effects/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-niagara-effects -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-niagara-effects
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-niagara-effects/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-niagara-effects -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-niagara-effects/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- spawn a Niagara system at a hit location and push the normal and color into it
- attach a persistent trail to a weapon socket without spawning per shot
- feed gameplay data into Niagara through Data Channels
- catch the moment an effect finishes and release the component back to the pool
- list the User parameters an asset exposes without opening the editor

## Example prompts
- Spawn ImpactSystem at HitLocation and set User.HitNormal on it
- Make a persistent trail on the MuzzleSocket using SpawnSystemAttached
- Send damage through a Niagara Data Channel so the effect picks it up

# UE Niagara Effects

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

Niagara ships as the `Niagara` plugin (`Engine/Plugins/FX/Niagara`, enabled by default). Game code spawns and drives systems through `UNiagaraFunctionLibrary` and `UNiagaraComponent`, feeds them structured data through data interfaces and Niagara Data Channels, and controls cost through component pooling and `UNiagaraEffectType` scalability. Add `"Niagara"` to your module's `PublicDependencyModuleNames`, plus `"NiagaraCore"` when you subclass `UNiagaraDataInterface`.

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.
