## What it does

The skill kicks in whenever Mass Entity shows up in a project — the archetype ECS Unreal uses to simulate thousands of agents. It walks through declaring fragments and tags, working with `FMassEntityManager`, structuring a `UMassProcessor`, selecting entities with `FMassEntityQuery`, iterating chunks through `FMassExecutionContext`, deferred commands, `UMassObserverProcessor`, entity relations, traits and config assets, and spawning with `AMassSpawner`.

Inside are reference files with code templates and a table of built-in types, plus a routing table that sends a request to the right section based on how it is phrased. The target engine is UE 5.8, APIs are checked against the 5.8 headers, and older forms sit in a separate deprecated list. `MassEntity` and `MassCore` are runtime modules that ship with the engine — add them to `Build.cs` and they link. The gameplay layers are different: spawning, representation, movement, LOD and replication come from the MassGameplay, MassAI and MassCrowd plugins, all marked Experimental in 5.8. That is worth checking before you pull an experimental plugin into a shipping project.

The skill does not replace engine docs. It hands you working patterns and flags the traps, like structural changes during iteration. For State Tree behavior, ZoneGraph navigation and thread-safety rules it points to sibling skills: ue-state-trees, ue-ai-navigation and ue-async-threading.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-mass-entity -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-mass-entity/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-mass-entity/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-mass-entity -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-mass-entity/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-mass-entity -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-mass-entity/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-mass-entity
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-mass-entity/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-mass-entity -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-mass-entity
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-mass-entity/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-mass-entity -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-mass-entity/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- declare a fragment, tag and shared fragment for your entities
- write a processor with the right phase and schedule
- select entities by a set of query requirements
- mutate fragments during iteration without crashing
- spawn a crowd from a config asset and traits

## Example prompts
- Write a Mass Entity processor that drains FMyHealthFragment on entities with FMyAliveTag
- Why does ForEachEntityChunk crash when I add a fragment inside the loop?
- Set up an AMassSpawner with an entity config asset for a thousand agents

# UE Mass Entity

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

Mass is an archetype Entity Component System for simulating thousands of agents with cache-friendly data layouts and multi-threaded processors. The core lives in the always-available runtime modules `MassEntity` and `MassCore` (plus `MassSignals`, `MassEngine`); gameplay-facing pieces (spawning, representation, movement, LOD, replication, actor bridging) come from the **MassGameplay (Experimental in 5.8)** plugin, and navigation/behavior from **MassAI (Experimental in 5.8)** and **MassCrowd (Experimental in 5.8)**.

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.

| Request is about… | Go to |
|---|---|
| Build.cs, includes, "enable the plugin" | [Modules and Build.cs](#modules-and-buildcs) |
| Declaring fragments, tags, shared/chunk data | [Fragments, Tags and Archetypes](#fragments-tags-and-archetypes) |
| Creating/destroying entities, direct mutation | [FMassEntityManager](#fmassentitymanager) |
| Writing a processor, scheduling, phases | [UMassProcessor](#umassprocessor) |
