## What it does

The skill steers an agent through player input in Unreal C++ on Enhanced Input. It covers `UInputAction` and `UInputMappingContext`, handler binding in `SetupPlayerInputComponent`, picking between `Started`, `Triggered` and `Completed`, built-in triggers such as hold and double-tap, and modifiers for dead zones or WASD-to-2D. A routing table points from the request to the right section: context priority, input mode filtering, input without a `PlayerController`, per-platform data, debugging.

Setup comes first. Add `"EnhancedInput"` to `PublicDependencyModuleNames` in `Build.cs`, then point `DefaultPlayerInputClass` and `DefaultInputComponentClass` at the Enhanced Input classes in `DefaultInput.ini`. Code that touches `FKey` or `EKeys` also needs `"InputCore"`, and input-mode filtering or the user-settings failure-reason containers pull in `"GameplayTags"`. Skip those and the build breaks at link time, which is the first thing worth checking.

The skill reads `.agents/ue-project-context.md` when it exists and carries on when it does not. APIs are verified against the 5.8 headers, with older forms kept in a separate deprecated section. UI input modes and CommonUI routing live in `ue-ui-umg-slate`; `PlayerController` and `Pawn` possession live in `ue-gameplay-framework`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-input-system -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-input-system/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-input-system/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-input-system -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-input-system/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-input-system -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-input-system/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-input-system
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-input-system/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-input-system -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-input-system
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-input-system/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-input-system -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-input-system/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a `UInputAction` and `UInputMappingContext` for a player action
- bind movement and jump handlers in `SetupPlayerInputComponent`
- choose between `Started`, `Triggered` and `Completed` for one action
- set a dead zone and turn WASD into a 2D vector
- add runtime key rebinding through `UEnhancedInputUserSettings`

## Example prompts
- Set up Enhanced Input for my character: a mapping context and a jump action
- Why doesn't `Triggered` fire on hold — walk me through the triggers
- Build a key rebinding screen with `UEnhancedInputUserSettings`

# UE Input System

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

Enhanced Input is the engine's only supported input path. It lives in the `EnhancedInput` plugin (`Engine/Plugins/EnhancedInput`, enabled by default in 5.8); add `"EnhancedInput"` to `PublicDependencyModuleNames` in your `Build.cs`, plus `"InputCore"` if you touch `FKey`/`EKeys` directly and `"GameplayTags"` if you use input-mode filtering or the user-settings failure-reason containers. The runtime pieces are `UEnhancedPlayerInput`, `UEnhancedInputComponent`, `UEnhancedInputLocalPlayerSubsystem`, the data assets `UInputAction` / `UInputMappingContext`, and `UEnhancedInputUserSettings` for player rebinding.

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.
