## What it does

The skill covers extending the Unreal Engine editor from C++: custom property panels with `IDetailCustomization` and `IPropertyTypeCustomization`, editor utility widgets and scripted actions via Blutility, main menu and toolbar entries through `UToolMenus`, editor modes on `UEdMode`, `UEditorSubsystem` singletons, plus asset types with factories and thumbnails. Target engine is UE 5.8, APIs are checked against the 5.8 headers, and older forms sit in a separate deprecated section.

You get working templates: the module entry in `.uproject` with `"Type": "Editor"`, the dependency list for `Build.cs` (`UnrealEd`, `Slate`, `SlateCore`, `PropertyEditor`, `ToolMenus`, `EditorSubsystem`, `Blutility`, `AssetTools`, `AssetDefinition`), a module class with `StartupModule` and `ShutdownModule`, and registration code for customizations and menus. A routing table maps each request to the right section, from module setup to asset validation on save.

One thing to watch: none of those editor dependencies may be referenced unconditionally from a Runtime module. They go under `if (Target.bBuildEditor)` together with `#if WITH_EDITOR`. Skip that and your packaged build breaks. For Slate fundamentals the skill points to `ue-ui-umg-slate`, for `Build.cs` wiring to `ue-module-build-system`. It reads `.agents/ue-project-context.md` when present and carries on when it is not.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-editor-tools -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-editor-tools/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-editor-tools/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-editor-tools -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-editor-tools/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-editor-tools -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-editor-tools/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-editor-tools
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-editor-tools/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-editor-tools -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-editor-tools
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-editor-tools/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-editor-tools -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-editor-tools/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a custom details panel for a class or struct
- add an entry to the editor main menu or toolbar
- wrap repeated actions in an editor utility widget
- create an editor subsystem that lives for the whole session
- register a new asset type with a factory and thumbnail

## Example prompts
- Write a details customization for UMyDataAsset so it shows my own layout instead of the default rows
- Add a toolbar button through UToolMenus that opens my panel
- Set up an editor module MyGameEditor with PropertyEditor and ToolMenus dependencies

# UE Editor Tools

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

Editor extensions live in a module with `"Type": "Editor"` and depend on `UnrealEd`, `Slate`, `SlateCore`, `PropertyEditor` (detail panels), `ToolMenus` (menus and toolbars), `EditorSubsystem` (`UEditorSubsystem`), `Blutility` (editor utility widgets and scripted actions), `AssetTools` and `AssetDefinition` (Content Browser asset types). None of these may be referenced unconditionally from a Runtime module (engine runtime modules add them only under `if (Target.bBuildEditor)` plus `#if WITH_EDITOR`, e.g. `AIModule.Build.cs:31-34`).

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.

| Request is about… | Go to |
|---|---|
| Creating the editor module, Build.cs, registration lifecycle | [Editor Module Setup](#editor-module-setup) |
| Custom property panel for a class or struct | [Detail Customizations](#detail-customizations) |
| UMG panel run inside the editor, right-click asset/actor actions | [Editor Utility Widgets and Scripted Actions](#editor-utility-widgets-and-scripted-actions) |
