## What it does

This skill covers the audio side of UE 5.8: one-shot SFX, looping ambience, music, dialogue and procedural audio. It walks through asset types (`USoundBase`, `USoundWave`, `USoundCue`, `UMetaSoundSource`), C++ playback calls (`PlaySound2D`, `PlaySoundAtLocation`, `SpawnSoundAttached`), attenuation and spatialization, voice concurrency, sound classes and mixes, submix and bus routing, MetaSounds, modulation, Quartz and analysis.

Everything is pinned to UE 5.8 — the APIs are checked against that version's headers, and older forms sit in a separate deprecated section. Your build file needs `Engine`, `AudioMixer` and `AudioExtensions`, plus `MetasoundEngine`, `MetasoundFrontend` and `AudioModulation` if you touch MetaSounds or modulation. If `.agents/ue-project-context.md` exists, the skill reads it for module names and enabled plugins.

A routing table maps the phrasing of your request to the right section, so attenuation questions do not land in the submix docs. Adjacent topics are handed off: VFX timing goes to `ue-niagara-effects`, anim-notify sounds to `ue-animation-system`, component lifetime to `ue-actor-component-architecture`. One hard rule worth remembering on networked projects: never call the playback functions on a dedicated server.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-audio-system -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-audio-system/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-audio-system/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-audio-system -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-audio-system/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-audio-system -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-audio-system/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-audio-system
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-audio-system/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-audio-system -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-audio-system
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-audio-system/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-audio-system -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-audio-system/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- fire a gunshot sound at a location with distance falloff
- tune concurrency so footsteps stop stealing voices
- split volume by category with sound classes and mixes
- build adaptive music in MetaSounds driven by runtime parameters
- sync a stinger to tempo with Quartz

## Example prompts
- play the gunshot with PlaySoundAtLocation and WeaponAttenuation
- why are footsteps eating my voices — check the concurrency settings
- build adaptive music in a MetaSound with an intensity parameter

# UE Audio System

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

Covers sound assets, playback from C++, attenuation, concurrency, sound classes and mixes, submix/bus routing, MetaSounds, modulation, Quartz and analysis. Engine-side code lives in `Engine/Classes/Sound` and `Components/AudioComponent.h` (module `Engine`), the mixer in `AudioMixer`, and the parameter interface in `AudioExtensions`. Plugin modules: `MetasoundEngine` / `MetasoundFrontend` (MetaSounds), `AudioModulation`, `AudioSynesthesia` (Beta in 5.8), `SubtitlesAndClosedCaptions` (Beta in 5.8).

```csharp
// MyGame.Build.cs
PublicDependencyModuleNames.AddRange(new string[] { "Engine", "AudioMixer", "AudioExtensions" });
PrivateDependencyModuleNames.AddRange(new string[] { "MetasoundEngine", "MetasoundFrontend", "AudioModulation" });
```

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.

| Request is about… | Go to |
|---|---|
| Which asset type to author (wave, cue, MetaSound), streaming | [Sound Assets](#sound-assets) |
| Firing a sound from gameplay code | [Playing Sounds](#playing-sounds) |
| Fades, pause, volume/pitch, finish callbacks, per-instance sends | [UAudioComponent Control](#uaudiocomponent-control) |
