## What it does

The skill provides patterns for C++ multithreading in Unreal Engine 5.8. It guides the agent across modern engine primitives: launching background work via `UE::Tasks::Launch`, sequencing access with `FPipe`, chaining prerequisites, or splitting array processing using `ParallelFor`. For persistent worker loops such as network listeners, it documents `FRunnable` thread setup.

Accessing any `UObject` outside the game thread causes crashes with garbage collection. The guide enforces running background jobs strictly on plain data structures, passing final results back to the game thread through `TWeakObjectPtr` via `AsyncTask(ENamedThreads::GameThread, ...)`.

Most concurrency tools reside in the `Core` module. Timers managed by `FTimerManager` require `Engine` in your `Build.cs`, while dispatching render commands via `ENQUEUE_RENDER_COMMAND` requires adding `RenderCore`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-async-threading -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-async-threading/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-async-threading/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-async-threading -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-async-threading/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-async-threading -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-async-threading/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-async-threading
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-async-threading/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-async-threading -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-async-threading
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-async-threading/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-async-threading -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-async-threading/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- offload heavy calculations from the game thread to background worker tasks
- serialize access to shared resources without explicit locks using `FPipe`
- run data-parallel array loops across CPU cores using `ParallelFor`
- return background computation results safely to UObjects on the game thread

## Example prompts
- Launch a background array calculation using UE::Tasks and return the result to the game thread
- Set up a sequence of dependent tasks using Prerequisites in Unreal Engine 5.8
- Implement a dedicated background socket thread using FRunnable

# UE Async and Threading

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

This skill covers moving work off the game thread and bringing results back: the `UE::Tasks` system (`Tasks/Task.h`, `Tasks/Pipe.h`), `Async`/`TFuture` (`Async/Async.h`, `Async/Future.h`), thread-pool `FAsyncTask` (`Async/AsyncWork.h`), `ParallelFor`, dedicated `FRunnable` threads, locks and lock-free queues, `FTSTicker` and `FTimerManager`. Everything except timers is in the `Core` module; `FTimerManager` is in `Engine`; `ENQUEUE_RENDER_COMMAND` is in `RenderCore`. Build.cs: `PublicDependencyModuleNames.AddRange(new string[] { "Core", "CoreUObject", "Engine" });` and add `"RenderCore"` only when enqueuing render commands.

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.
