## What it does

This skill guides assistants through writing and debugging `AActor` and `UActorComponent` C++ code verified against Unreal Engine 5.8 headers. It enforces the correct order of lifecycle hooks, preventing crashes caused by calling `GetWorld()` inside the constructor where it evaluates to `nullptr`. It also prevents raw `new` or `delete` calls on engine types, directing the model toward `UWorld::SpawnActor`, `CreateDefaultSubobject`, and `DestroyComponent`.

The instructions cover deferred spawning via `SpawnActorDeferred`, attaching components with `SetupAttachment`, configuring tick intervals, and using `UINTERFACE`. Projects must declare `Core`, `CoreUObject`, and `Engine` dependencies inside the module's `Build.cs` file. If present, `.agents/ue-project-context.md` provides module conventions and plugin settings before code generation begins.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-actor-component-architecture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-actor-component-architecture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-actor-component-architecture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-actor-component-architecture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-actor-component-architecture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-actor-component-architecture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-actor-component-architecture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-actor-component-architecture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-actor-component-architecture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-actor-component-architecture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-actor-component-architecture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-actor-component-architecture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-actor-component-architecture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-actor-component-architecture/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Split monolithic actor logic into dedicated `UActorComponent` units
- Prevent null pointer crashes from world access in class constructors
- Implement deferred spawning with `SpawnActorDeferred` and `FinishSpawning`
- Clean up timers and dynamic bindings properly inside `EndPlay`

## Example prompts
- Create an actor in C++ with a custom health component and wire the delegate in `PostInitializeComponents`
- Show how to spawn an actor with deferred initialization before `BeginPlay` runs
- Refactor this actor's movement logic out of `Tick` into a reusable `USceneComponent`

# UE Actor-Component Architecture

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

Build actors out of components: lifecycle hooks in the right order, spawning (immediate, deferred, pooled), component creation and attachment, ticking, and C++ interfaces. Everything here is in the `Engine` module (`GameFramework/Actor.h`, `Components/ActorComponent.h`, `Components/SceneComponent.h`, `Engine/World.h`) on top of `CoreUObject`; a game module's Build.cs needs `"Core", "CoreUObject", "Engine"`.

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.
