# typeset

Audits fonts, type scale and text hierarchy in a UI, then rebuilds them as a system. Useful when the layout looks generic.

## What it does

Run `/typeset` and the skill grades the current type on five axes: font choices, hierarchy, sizing and scale, readability, consistency. It flags invisible defaults (Inter, Roboto, Arial, system stacks), sizes packed too close together (14, 15, 16px reads muddy) and weight contrasts too weak to see. From there it drafts a plan covering font replacement, scale, weight roles, spacing and a documented schema so later screens stay in line.

The fixes follow concrete rules. App UIs get a fixed `rem` scale; marketing and content pages get `clamp(min, preferred, max)` for headings while body text stays fixed. Line length is capped with `max-width: 65ch`, body text sits at 16px or above, `line-height` runs 1.1–1.2 for headings and 1.5–1.7 for body. Tables and figures get `tabular-nums` and right alignment, small caps get tracking. Token names should describe the role (`--text-body`, `--text-heading`), not the value.

Before any of that, the skill loads `$frontend-design` for its design principles and context-gathering protocol. With no project context yet, `$setup` has to load first. So this is a step inside the `better-web-ui` skill chain rather than a standalone tool. It also leans on the typography and text-hierarchy references shipped in the same repository.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill typeset -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/typeset/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/typeset/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill typeset -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/typeset/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill typeset -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/typeset/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui typeset
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/typeset/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill typeset -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/typeset
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/typeset/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill typeset -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/typeset/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- swap default Inter and Roboto for a face that matches the brand
- separate heading and body sizes so the hierarchy reads at a glance
- cap line length at a comfortable 45–75 characters
- collapse a dozen near-identical weights into three or four roles
- align numbers in tables with `tabular-nums`

## Example prompts
- run /typeset on the settings page, the text hierarchy feels off
- the typography looks generic, fix the scale and weights
- card text is hard to read, sort out line length and line-height

Assess and improve typography that feels generic, inconsistent, or poorly structured — turning default-looking text into intentional, well-crafted type.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/typeset`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

## Assess Current Typography

Analyze what's weak or generic about the current type:

1. **Font choices**:
   - Are we using invisible defaults? (Inter, Roboto, Arial, Open Sans, system defaults)
   - Does the font match the brand personality? (A playful brand shouldn't use a corporate typeface)
   - Are there too many font families? (More than 2-3 is almost always a mess)

2. **Hierarchy**:
   - Can you tell headings from body from captions at a glance?
   - Are font sizes too close together? (14px, 15px, 16px = muddy hierarchy)
   - Are weight contrasts strong enough? (Medium vs Regular is barely visible)

3. **Sizing & scale**:
   - Is there a consistent type scale, or are sizes arbitrary?
   - Does body text meet minimum readability? (16px+)
   - Is the sizing strategy appropriate for the context? (Fixed `rem` scales for app UIs; fluid `clamp()` for marketing/content page headings)

4. **Readability**:
   - Are line lengths comfortable? (45-75 characters ideal)
   - Is line-height appropriate for the font and context?
   - Is there enough contrast between text and background?
   - Are italics, underlines, and all-caps being used deliberately rather than as decoration?

5. **Consistency**:
   - Are the same elements styled the same way throughout?
   - Are font weights used consistently? (Not bold in one section, semibold in another for the same role)
   - Is letter-spacing intentional or default everywhere?
   - Is capitalization consistent by role? (titles, buttons, labels, toasts, metadata)

**CRITICAL**: The goal isn't to make text "fancier" — it's to make it clearer, more readable, and more intentional. Good typography is invisible; bad typography is distracting.
