## What it does

The skill covers the whole unit testing loop for TypeScript and NestJS. Six workflows sit inside: setup, writing, reviewing, running, debugging and optimizing. The agent picks one based on what you ask, reads that workflow file first, then works through its steps while loading reference material along the way.

The knowledge base is split by topic: core rules and assertion patterns, then NestJS components — services, controllers, guards, interceptors, pipes and filters. Mocking has its own section for `DeepMocked` and `createMock` plus test data factories. Repositories are covered for `mongodb-memory-server` and `pg-mem`, with separate files for Kafka handlers and Redis.

One detail stands out. The skill insists on redirecting test output to temp files instead of the console, because verbose Jest logs eat the agent's context. A `UT_SESSION` variable keeps filenames unique so parallel agents don't overwrite each other's logs. If your Jest setup already deviates from the defaults, expect the agent to push it back toward the skill's own conventions.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bmad-labs/skills --skill typescript-unit-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/typescript-unit-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/typescript-unit-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bmad-labs/skills --skill typescript-unit-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/typescript-unit-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bmad-labs/skills --skill typescript-unit-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/typescript-unit-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bmad-labs/skills typescript-unit-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/typescript-unit-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bmad-labs/skills --skill typescript-unit-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bmad-labs/skills --path skills/typescript-unit-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/typescript-unit-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bmad-labs/skills --skill typescript-unit-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- set up Jest in a project with no tests yet
- write unit tests for a NestJS service or controller
- mock dependencies with `createMock`
- diagnose a failing or flaky test
- kill open handles that stop Jest from exiting

## Example prompts
- Set up Jest in this project and write tests for `UserService`
- Add unit tests for this controller using AAA structure
- Review the tests in `src/orders` and find open handles

description: Unit testing for TypeScript/NestJS projects using Jest, @golevelup/ts-jest (DeepMocked/createMock), and in-memory databases, with AAA structure. Unit testing validates individual functions, methods, and classes in isolation by mocking all external dependencies.

## Workflows

For guided, step-by-step execution of unit testing tasks, use the appropriate workflow:

| Workflow | Purpose | When to Use |
|----------|---------|-------------|
| [Setup](workflows/setup/workflow.md) | Initialize test infrastructure | New project or missing test setup |
| [Writing](workflows/writing/workflow.md) | Write new unit tests | Creating tests for components |
| [Reviewing](workflows/reviewing/workflow.md) | Review existing tests | Code review, quality audit |
| [Running](workflows/running/workflow.md) | Execute tests | Running tests, analyzing results |
| [Debugging](workflows/debugging/workflow.md) | Fix failing tests | Tests failing, need diagnosis |
| [Optimizing](workflows/optimizing/workflow.md) | Improve test performance | Slow tests, maintainability |

## Workflow Selection Guide

**IMPORTANT**: Before starting any testing task, identify the user's intent and load the appropriate workflow.

### Detect User Intent → Select Workflow

| User Says / Wants | Workflow to Load | File |
|-------------------|------------------|------|
| "Set up tests", "configure Jest", "add testing to project", "install test dependencies" | **Setup** | `workflows/setup/workflow.md` |
| "Write tests", "add tests", "create tests", "test this service/controller" | **Writing** | `workflows/writing/workflow.md` |
| "Review tests", "check test quality", "audit tests", "are these tests good?" | **Reviewing** | `workflows/reviewing/workflow.md` |
| "Run tests", "execute tests", "check if tests pass", "show test results" | **Running** | `workflows/running/workflow.md` |
| "Fix tests", "debug tests", "tests are failing", "why is this test broken?" | **Debugging** | `workflows/debugging/workflow.md` |
| "Speed up tests", "optimize tests", "tests are slow", "fix open handles" | **Optimizing** | `workflows/optimizing/workflow.md` |

### Workflow Execution Protocol

1. **ALWAYS load the workflow file first** - Read the full workflow before taking action
