## What it does

The rules sit in 9 categories ranked by impact: type architecture, narrowing and guards, modern TypeScript, React and TSX, generics, compiler performance, error safety, runtime patterns, quirks. Each rule carries a prefix (`arch-`, `narrow-`, `modern-`, `tsx-`, `generic-`, `compile-`, `error-`, `perf-`, `quirk-`) and lives in its own file under `references/`. The agent pulls the file it needs when a task matches the category.

What you get in practice: replacing `as` casts with runtime-checked guards, discriminated unions instead of string enums, `satisfies` for config objects, the `using` keyword for cleanup, const type parameters, `with` import attributes instead of the deprecated `assert`. For React 19 it covers typing props directly rather than through `React.FC`, passing `ref` as a prop instead of `forwardRef`, and extending native element props with `ComponentPropsWithRef`. A compiler section adds explicit return types on exported functions, `isolatedDeclarations` for parallel declaration emit, and project references for monorepo builds.

The rules target TypeScript 6.0 and React 19, so on older versions the advice around `using`, `isolatedDeclarations` and `with` attributes won't compile. Check your compiler version before letting the agent loose on a big refactor. Install is a single `npx skills add` command.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill typescript-refactor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/typescript-refactor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/typescript-refactor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill typescript-refactor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/typescript-refactor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill typescript-refactor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/typescript-refactor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pproenca/dot-skills typescript-refactor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/typescript-refactor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill typescript-refactor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills --path skills/.experimental/typescript-refactor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/typescript-refactor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill typescript-refactor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/.experimental/typescript-refactor/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- strip `as` casts and replace them with checked type guards
- model mutually exclusive props as discriminated unions
- speed up monorepo builds with project references
- type props and hooks in `.tsx` files without `React.FC`
- adopt TS 6.0 features without breaking the runtime

## Example prompts
- Refactor this file: drop the `as` casts and add type guards
- Review the typing in `Button.tsx` against the typescript-refactor rules
- Switch this config to `satisfies` instead of a type annotation

name: typescript-refactor
description: TypeScript and TSX refactoring and modernization guidelines from a principal specialist perspective, current to TypeScript 6.0 and React 19. This skill should be used when refactoring, reviewing, or modernizing TypeScript or React/TSX code for type safety, compiler performance, and idiomatic patterns. Triggers on tasks involving type architecture, narrowing, generics, discriminated unions, error handling, React component and hook typing, or migration to modern TypeScript features (satisfies, using, const type parameters, inferred type predicates, isolatedDeclarations, erasable syntax, import attributes).

# TypeScript Refactor Best Practices

Comprehensive TypeScript and TSX refactoring and modernization guide designed for AI agents and LLMs. Contains 47 rules across 9 categories, prioritized by impact to guide automated refactoring, code review, and code generation. Current to TypeScript 6.0 and React 19.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Refactoring TypeScript or React/TSX code for type safety and maintainability
- Designing type architectures (discriminated unions, branded types, generics)
- Narrowing types to eliminate unsafe `as` casts
- Typing React components and hooks (props, refs, events, state) in `.tsx` files
- Adopting modern TypeScript 5.x–6.0 features (`satisfies`, `using`, const type parameters, inferred type predicates, erasable syntax, `with` import attributes)
- Optimizing compiler performance in large codebases (`isolatedDeclarations`, project references)
- Implementing type-safe error handling patterns
- Reviewing code for TypeScript quirks and pitfalls

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Type Architecture | CRITICAL | `arch-` |
| 2 | Type Narrowing & Guards | CRITICAL | `narrow-` |
| 3 | Modern TypeScript | HIGH | `modern-` |
| 4 | React & TSX | HIGH | `tsx-` |
| 5 | Generic Patterns | HIGH | `generic-` |
| 6 | Compiler Performance | MEDIUM-HIGH | `compile-` |
| 7 | Error Safety | MEDIUM | `error-` |
| 8 | Runtime Patterns | MEDIUM | `perf-` |
| 9 | Quirks & Pitfalls | LOW-MEDIUM | `quirk-` |
