# typescript-core

A skill with modern TypeScript patterns: a strict tsconfig, runtime validation, advanced types. Useful once a TS codebase outgrows its type setup.

## What it does

The skill walks through TypeScript project setup: a baseline `tsconfig.json` with `strict`, `noUncheckedIndexedAccess`, `exactOptionalPropertyTypes` and `verbatimModuleSyntax`, plus a table of key compiler options and when to turn each on. Then come type patterns — `const` type parameters, the `satisfies` operator, template literal types, discriminated unions with exhaustiveness checks.

A separate section covers runtime validation. TypeScript types vanish at runtime, so for API responses, forms and config files it points to Zod, TypeBox or Valibot, with a comparison of bundle size and speed. There are decision trees for `type` versus `interface` and generics versus unions, plus a troubleshooting list for common compiler errors.

Inside you get an entry point with a summary and a set of reference files: `advanced-types.md`, `configuration.md`, `runtime-validation.md`, `advanced-patterns-2025.md`, `decision-trees.md`, `troubleshooting.md`, `js-quality-antipatterns.md`. The skill is not user-invocable and disables model invocation, so it loads as a reference rather than a command. It targets TS 5.2 and later — on older versions the `using` and decorator examples will not compile.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill typescript-core -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/typescript-core/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/typescript-core/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill typescript-core -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/typescript-core/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill typescript-core -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/typescript-core/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills typescript-core
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/typescript-core/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill typescript-core -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/typescript/typescript-core
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/typescript-core/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill typescript-core -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/typescript/typescript-core/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn on strict mode in an existing project without a flood of errors
- swap `any` for `unknown` where external data gets parsed
- pick a validation library that fits the bundle budget
- keep literal types in a config object with `satisfies`
- figure out why compilation got slow

## Example prompts
- Set up tsconfig for a new TypeScript project using the typescript-core patterns
- Check this file against the typescript-core antipatterns
- Help me choose between Zod and TypeBox for validating API responses

# TypeScript Core Patterns

Modern TypeScript development patterns for type safety, runtime validation, and optimal configuration.

## Quick Start

**New Project:** Use 2025 tsconfig → Enable `strict` + `noUncheckedIndexedAccess` → Choose Zod for validation

**Existing Project:** Enable `strict: false` initially → Fix `any` with `unknown` → Add `noUncheckedIndexedAccess`

**API Development:** Zod schemas at boundaries → `z.infer<typeof Schema>` for types → `satisfies` for routes

**Library Development:** Enable `declaration: true` → Use `const` type parameters → See [advanced-patterns-2025.md](./references/advanced-patterns-2025.md)

## Quick Reference

### tsconfig.json 2025 Baseline

```json
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "target": "ES2022",
    "module": "NodeNext",
    "moduleResolution": "NodeNext",
    "strict": true,
    "noUncheckedIndexedAccess": true,
    "exactOptionalPropertyTypes": true,
    "verbatimModuleSyntax": true,
    "isolatedModules": true,
    "skipLibCheck": true,
    "declaration": true,
    "declarationMap": true
  }
}
```

### Key Compiler Options

| Option | Purpose | When to Enable |
|--------|---------|----------------|
| `noUncheckedIndexedAccess` | Forces null checks on array/object access | Always for safety |
| `exactOptionalPropertyTypes` | Distinguishes `undefined` from missing | APIs with optional fields |
| `verbatimModuleSyntax` | Enforces explicit type-only imports | ESM projects |
