# twitter-cli

A skill that hands your agent a twitter binary for Twitter/X: pull the timeline, search, post, reply, like. Handy when tweets need to land in context or go out from a project.

## What it does

The skill documents the `twitter` binary and its commands — `feed`, `search`, `bookmarks`, `user-posts`, `followers`, `post`, `reply`. Your agent picks them up on its own once you ask for something on Twitter/X. Tables are the default view; `--yaml` and `--json` give structured output, and `-c` strips fields down to id, author, text, likes and time, which keeps the context window lean.

Before running anything, the agent checks auth with `twitter status --yaml`. Two routes from there: let it pull cookies from a browser (Arc, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave), or export `TWITTER_AUTH_TOKEN` and `TWITTER_CT0`. Here is the catch. Posting, replying and quoting need the full browser cookie set — with env vars alone a write can come back as error 226 about automated behaviour. Reading the timeline works fine with env vars.

The CLI itself installs separately from the skill: `uv tool install twitter-cli` or `pipx install twitter-cli`, Python 3.8+ required. Upgrading with `uv tool upgrade twitter-cli` is advised, since an old build tends to throw API errors. The skill only tells the agent how to drive it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add public-clis/twitter-cli --skill twitter-cli -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/twitter-cli/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/twitter-cli/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add public-clis/twitter-cli --skill twitter-cli -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/twitter-cli/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add public-clis/twitter-cli --skill twitter-cli -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/twitter-cli/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install public-clis/twitter-cli twitter-cli
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/twitter-cli/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add public-clis/twitter-cli --skill twitter-cli -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/public-clis/twitter-cli
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/twitter-cli/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add public-clis/twitter-cli --skill twitter-cli -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/public-clis/twitter-cli/tree/HEAD/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- dump the home timeline to YAML for review
- find recent tweets on a keyword and save them to a file
- publish a post with an image from the project
- reply to a specific tweet by URL
- list who follows an account

## Example prompts
- Show my Twitter timeline for today as YAML
- Search recent tweets about AI agents and save them to results.json
- Post "New release is out" with cover.png attached

# twitter-cli — Twitter/X CLI Tool

**Binary:** `twitter`
**Credentials:** browser cookies (auto-extracted) or env vars

## Setup

```bash
# Install (requires Python 3.8+)
uv tool install twitter-cli
# Or: pipx install twitter-cli
# Upgrade to latest (recommended to avoid API errors)
uv tool upgrade twitter-cli
# Or: pipx upgrade twitter-cli
```

## Authentication

**IMPORTANT FOR AGENTS**: Before executing ANY twitter-cli command, you MUST first check if credentials exist. If not, you MUST proactively guide the user through the authentication process. Do NOT assume credentials are configured.

**CRITICAL**: Write operations (posting tweets, replying, quoting) REQUIRE full browser cookies. Only providing `auth_token` + `ct0` via env vars may result in **226 error** ("looks like automated behavior"). For best results, use browser cookie extraction.

### Step 0: Check if already authenticated

```bash
twitter status --yaml >/dev/null && echo "AUTH_OK" || echo "AUTH_NEEDED"
```

If `AUTH_OK`, skip to [Command Reference](#command-reference).
If `AUTH_NEEDED`, proceed to guide the user:

### Step 1: Guide user to authenticate

**Method A: Browser cookie extraction (recommended)**

Ensure user is logged into x.com in one of: Arc, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave. twitter-cli auto-extracts cookies.
All Chrome profiles are scanned automatically. To specify a profile: `TWITTER_CHROME_PROFILE="Profile 2" twitter feed`.
To prioritize a specific browser: `TWITTER_BROWSER=chrome twitter feed` (supported: arc, chrome, edge, firefox, brave).

```bash
twitter whoami
```

**Method B: Environment variables**

```bash
export TWITTER_AUTH_TOKEN="<auth_token from browser>"
export TWITTER_CT0="<ct0 from browser>"
twitter whoami
```

**Method C: Full cookie string (for cloud/remote agents)**

Tell the user:

> 我需要你的 Twitter 登录凭证。请按以下步骤获取：
>
> 1. 用 Chrome/Edge/Firefox 打开 https://x.com（确保已登录）

Then extract and set env vars:

```bash
FULL_COOKIE="<user's cookie string>"
export TWITTER_AUTH_TOKEN=$(echo "$FULL_COOKIE" | grep -oE 'auth_token=[a-f0-9]+' | cut -d= -f2)
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 23e9c513824bec0f

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 23e9c513824bec0f tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
