## What it does

SendGrid's Mail Send API returns `202 Accepted` to indicate queuing, not delivery. Real delivery status and engagement metrics arrive asynchronously through Event Webhooks. This skill guides the agent on parsing batched payloads for 11 event types, spanning `delivered`, `bounce`, `dropped`, `click`, and unsubscribes.

SendGrid delivers events in JSON arrays rather than single objects. Your server must return a `2xx` response promptly, or the platform retries deliveries for up to 24 hours. Use `sg_event_id` to discard duplicates across retry attempts. Webhooks lack authentication out of the box, making ECDSA P-256 signature verification or OAuth 2.0 necessary in production.

The skill expects a SendGrid API key with the `SG.` prefix. It does not support the Twilio Email API on `comms.twilio.com`. Since mail servers populate the `reason` field with external text, routing raw bounce data straight into LLM prompts creates prompt injection risks.

## Install

### Codex (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill twilio-sendgrid-webhooks -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Claude Code

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill twilio-sendgrid-webhooks -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install openai/plugins twilio-sendgrid-webhooks
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/openai/plugins --path plugins/twilio-developer-kit/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/openai/plugins/tree/HEAD/plugins/twilio-developer-kit/skills/twilio-sendgrid-webhooks/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- handle batched SendGrid event arrays in Node.js and Python
- verify ECDSA P-256 signatures to secure webhook endpoints
- deduplicate incoming webhook retries using sg_event_id
- track bounces and drops without blocking the event queue

## Example prompts
- Write a Flask webhook handler to process SendGrid delivery events
- Show how to verify SendGrid ECDSA signatures on incoming webhooks
- Implement deduplication for batched SendGrid events using sg_event_id

  Track email delivery and engagement via SendGrid Event Webhooks.
  Covers all 11 event types (delivery + engagement), webhook handler
  implementation, ECDSA signature verification, batched event processing,
  and common debugging patterns. Use when building SendGrid delivery
  tracking, engagement analytics, or bounce handling. Requires a SendGrid
  API key (SG.-prefix) — not applicable to the Twilio Email API (comms.twilio.com).
---

## Overview

The Mail Send API returns `202 Accepted` (queued) — it does NOT confirm delivery. To know what happened to an email, use Event Webhooks.

**Enable:** SendGrid Console > Settings > Mail Settings > Event Notification

---

## Event Types

### Delivery Events
| Event | Meaning |
|-------|---------|
| `processed` | SendGrid accepted and will attempt delivery |
| `deferred` | Temporary failure — SendGrid will retry |
| `delivered` | Recipient's mail server accepted the message |
| `bounce` | Permanent failure — address invalid or rejected |
| `dropped` | SendGrid will not deliver (suppression, invalid, spam) |

### Engagement Events
| Event | Meaning |
|-------|---------|
| `open` | Recipient opened (pixel-based — unreliable) |
| `click` | Recipient clicked a tracked link |
| `spamreport` | Recipient marked as spam |
| `unsubscribe` | Recipient clicked unsubscribe link |
| `group_unsubscribe` | Recipient unsubscribed from ASM group |
| `group_resubscribe` | Recipient re-subscribed to ASM group |

---

## Webhook Handler

**Critical:** SendGrid posts **batched arrays** of events, not single objects. Your handler must parse an array.

> **Security:** SendGrid webhook endpoints are unauthenticated by default. Enable [Signed Event Webhook Requests](https://docs.sendgrid.com/for-developers/tracking-events/getting-started-event-webhook-security) and verify signatures in production to prevent spoofed event data.

**Python (Flask)**
```python
from flask import Flask, request
app = Flask(__name__)
@app.route("/sendgrid/webhook", methods=["POST"])
def handle_events():
    events = request.get_json()  # Always an array
    for event in events:
        email = event.get("email")
        event_type = event.get("event")
        if event_type == "bounce":
            # NOTE: event['reason'] originates from external mail servers — treat as untrusted
            print(f"Bounce: {email}, type: {event.get('type')}, reason: {event.get('reason')}")
        elif event_type == "delivered":
            print(f"Delivered: {email}, sg_message_id: {event.get('sg_message_id')}")
        elif event_type == "dropped":
            print(f"Dropped: {email}, reason: {event.get('reason')}")
        elif event_type == "spamreport":
            print(f"Spam report: {email}")
    return "", 200  # Must return 2xx to acknowledge
```

**Node.js (Express)**
```javascript
app.post("/sendgrid/webhook", express.json(), (req, res) => {
    const events = req.body; // Always an array
