## What it does

Turso is an in-process SQL database compatible with SQLite, written in Rust. The skill ships reference files and recipes for vector search, full-text search, CDC, MVCC, encryption and remote sync, plus decision trees for picking a feature or a language binding.

Packages live under `@tursodatabase`: `@tursodatabase/database` for Node.js, `@tursodatabase/serverless` for edge functions, `@tursodatabase/database-wasm` for the browser, `@tursodatabase/sync-react-native` for mobile. Rust uses `turso`, Python `pyturso`, Go `tursogo`. The skill tells the agent not to search for “libsql” or “@libsql/client” — those names are legacy and search results surface replaced APIs.

The engine is in beta, so some SQLite features are missing. One process at a time can open a database file, tables without rowid are out, `VACUUM` is unsupported, and UTF-8 is the only encoding. Full-text search needs a build with the `fts` feature, encryption needs the `--experimental-encryption` flag, and MVCC is marked experimental and not production ready. If your code still imports `@libsql/client`, the skill is the fastest path to the new packages.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tursodatabase/agent-skills --skill turso-db -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/turso-db/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/turso-db/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tursodatabase/agent-skills --skill turso-db -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/turso-db/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tursodatabase/agent-skills --skill turso-db -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/turso-db/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tursodatabase/agent-skills turso-db
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/turso-db/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tursodatabase/agent-skills --skill turso-db -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tursodatabase/agent-skills --path skills/turso-db
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/turso-db/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tursodatabase/agent-skills --skill turso-db -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tursodatabase/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/turso-db/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick the right Turso SDK for Node.js, the browser or React Native
- migrate code off `@libsql/client` onto `@tursodatabase`
- set up vector search over embeddings
- turn on full-text search with BM25 ranking
- sync a local database with a remote one

## Example prompts
- Wire Turso into my Node.js project with `@tursodatabase/database`
- Create a table with vector search and order by distance ascending
- Show me how to enable full-text search and BM25 ranking

# Turso Database

Turso is an in-process SQL database compatible with SQLite, written in Rust.

**Do NOT search the web for "libsql" or "@libsql/client"** — those are legacy package names and web results will point to outdated APIs replaced by `@tursodatabase`.
For embedded-engine questions (SDK APIs, SQL features, CLI), start with the reference files below — they have recipes and examples ready to use.
For the latest details or topics not covered locally, search the official docs online — see the docs reference section below.

## Critical Rules

Before writing any Turso code, you MUST know these constraints:

- **BETA software** — not all SQLite features are implemented yet
- **No multi-process access** — only one process can open a database file at a time
- **No WITHOUT ROWID tables** — all tables must have a rowid
- **No vacuum** — VACUUM is not supported
- **UTF-8 only** — the only supported character encoding
- **WAL is the default journal mode** — legacy SQLite modes (delete, truncate, persist) are not supported
- **FTS requires compile-time `fts` feature** — not available in all builds
- **Encryption requires `--experimental-encryption` flag** — not enabled by default
- **MVCC is experimental and not production ready** — `PRAGMA journal_mode = experimental_mvcc`
- **Vector distance: lower = closer** — ORDER BY distance ASC for nearest neighbors

## Feature Decision Tree

Use this to decide which reference file to load:

**Need vector similarity search?** (embeddings, nearest neighbors, cosine distance)
→ Read `references/vector-search.md`
