## What it does

This skill manages `ExternalDataSchema` configurations in PostHog warehouse environments. Through specific tools, the agent inspects active settings, checks columns on the live source, and applies updates via `external-data-schemas-partial-update`. It handles transitions between `full_refresh`, `incremental`, `append`, `cdc`, and `webhook`.

The workflow starts with `external-data-schemas-retrieve`, refreshes candidate columns, and posts only modified fields. You must wait or cancel if the schema status is `Running`. Setting up CDC requires `primary_key_columns`, and its `sync_frequency` cannot exceed `7day`.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill tuning-incremental-sync-config -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tuning-incremental-sync-config/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tuning-incremental-sync-config/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill tuning-incremental-sync-config -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tuning-incremental-sync-config/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill tuning-incremental-sync-config -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tuning-incremental-sync-config/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PostHog/skills tuning-incremental-sync-config
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tuning-incremental-sync-config/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill tuning-incremental-sync-config -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PostHog/skills --path skills/omnibus/tuning-incremental-sync-config
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tuning-incremental-sync-config/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill tuning-incremental-sync-config -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- switch warehouse sync from full refresh to incremental
- update incremental columns or primary keys
- configure CDC mode for a Postgres source table
- adjust table sync frequency or pause updates

## Example prompts
- Switch my orders table from full refresh to incremental using updated_at
- Set the sync frequency of the analytics_events schema to 1hour
- Check CDC prerequisites and enable CDC mode for postgres_billing

  Change the sync configuration of an existing data warehouse schema — switch sync_type, pick a different
  incremental_field, set primary_key_columns, choose cdc_table_mode, or change sync_frequency. Use when the user
  asks "switch my orders table from full refresh to incremental", "this table is syncing too slowly / too
  frequently", "I need to pick a different incremental column", "set up CDC for this Postgres table", or when
  diagnosis of a failing sync pointed to an incremental-field or PK misconfiguration.

# Tuning incremental sync config

A sync's configuration lives on the `ExternalDataSchema` and can be changed any time via
`external-data-schemas-partial-update`. Most changes are non-destructive (take effect on the next sync), but a few
(switching sync_type, changing primary keys) require careful handling to avoid corrupting the synced data.

## When to use this skill

- The user wants to change how an already-connected table is synced
- A diagnosis flagged the incremental field or primary key as wrong
- The table is syncing too often / not often enough
- Switching an incremental table to CDC (or vice versa)
- The source table was changed on the other side (new columns, dropped columns) and the sync config needs to catch up

If the user is setting up a brand-new source, use `setting-up-a-data-warehouse-source` instead — configuration is
chosen at creation time there.
