## What it does

The skill activates on terminal UI work: layouts, palettes, keybindings, split panes, progress bars, modal dialogs, focus management. It covers Ratatui, Ink, Textual, Bubbletea and other TUI frameworks. Inside are decision tables — which layout fits which job, how to behave on resize, how to keep input and rendering apart.

Input and focus get their own section. The advice is one owner for input parsing: with Crossterm, don't mix `EventStream` with `read`/`poll`, and don't run competing readers. Keys like `q`, `j` and `/` shouldn't fire globally while someone types in a text field. A modal routes input only to itself and restores the previous focus target when it closes.

State and async work are separated into events, transitions, effects and rendering, so a drawing function never starts network calls. A failure table walks through stale search results, a row that moves after refresh, and duplicate writes from a repeated action. The skill points to `references/app-patterns.md` and `references/visual-catalog.md`; its documentation was checked on 2026-09-04, so take framework APIs from your project's versions.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill tui-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tui-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tui-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill tui-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tui-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill tui-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tui-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install hyperb1iss/hyperskills tui-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tui-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill tui-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/hyperb1iss/hyperskills --path skills/tui-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tui-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill tui-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/hyperb1iss/hyperskills/tree/HEAD/skills/tui-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a layout that matches the actual workflow
- keep input parsing and rendering separate to avoid double submits
- survive a terminal resize without losing selection or state
- discard a stale search result that lands after a newer query
- make errors retrievable instead of a toast that disappears

## Example prompts
- help me design a layout for a terminal metrics dashboard
- check my keybindings — does `q` clash with text input?
- how should I structure state and effects in a Ratatui TUI

# TUI Design System

Design around the user's repeated action, the data they must keep in view, and the terminal capabilities actually available. Keep input responsive under slow I/O and make selection, focus, and operation state explicit.

**Primary documentation checked: 2026-09-04.** Framework APIs change; use the project's versions. Follow the project's visual identity (SilkCircuit Neon for Bliss's personal tools) rather than treating an example palette as a universal theme.

| ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| Browse related lists and details | Persistent multi-panel | Stable panel roles and visible focus |
| Navigate a hierarchy | Miller columns or drill-down stack | Back restores selection and scroll position |
| Monitor changing measurements | Widget dashboard | Labels, units, freshness, and a path to details |
| Edit requests, queries, or configuration | Sidebar, editor, results | Keep editing state when switching panels |
| Select a value for a shell command | Inline picker or overlay | Return a clean value and preserve shell scrollback |
| Read logs or events | Fixed controls plus virtualized list | Follow mode is explicit; scrolling back stops auto-follow |
