## What it does

Reach for this skill when a tsup project needs to move to tsdown, the Rolldown-powered library bundler. It ships a knowledge base: property renames, config transformation rules, default value differences, and alternatives for options tsdown no longer has.

The catch is the two-stage path. tsdown v0.23 dropped the tsup compatibility options — `bundle`, `outExtension`, `publicDir`, `removeNodeProtocol`, `injectStyle`, `skipNodeModulesBundle`. On v0.23+ they fail type checking and get silently ignored at runtime, so one missed rename produces wrong output with no error at all. The skill tells you to migrate on `tsdown@0.22.14` first, the last version that still accepts those options and flags each with a deprecation warning. A build with zero warnings is the completeness check. Only then upgrade to `^0.23.0` or newer.

Running it needs Node.js `^22.18.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0` at build time. That is the toolchain, not the output. A library that supported Node.js 18 or 20 under tsup can keep doing so through the `target` option: build with Node.js 22+ in CI, then test the built output on the older versions. One more thing to watch — `external` and `noExternal` are the only tsup names tsdown v0.23 still accepts, and mixing them with `deps.neverBundle` or `deps.alwaysBundle` throws an error.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rolldown/tsdown --skill tsdown-migrate -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tsdown-migrate/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tsdown-migrate/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rolldown/tsdown --skill tsdown-migrate -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tsdown-migrate/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rolldown/tsdown --skill tsdown-migrate -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tsdown-migrate/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rolldown/tsdown tsdown-migrate
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tsdown-migrate/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rolldown/tsdown --skill tsdown-migrate -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rolldown/tsdown --path skills/tsdown-migrate
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tsdown-migrate/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rolldown/tsdown --skill tsdown-migrate -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/rolldown/tsdown/tree/HEAD/skills/tsdown-migrate/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rename `tsup.config.*` to `tsdown.config.*` without losing options
- replace compatibility options removed in tsdown v0.23
- keep the old defaults for format, clean, dts and target
- work out why a v0.23 build emits wrong output with no error
- move `external` and `noExternal` under the `deps` namespace

## Example prompts
- migrate this project from tsup to tsdown following the skill steps
- review tsdown.config.ts and find leftover tsup options
- why does tsdown v0.23 ignore my options?

# Migrating from tsup to tsdown

Knowledge base for AI agents to migrate tsup projects to tsdown — the Rolldown-powered library bundler.

## Target Version: Two-Stage Migration

tsdown v0.23 removed all previously-deprecated tsup compatibility options — `bundle`, `outExtension`, `publicDir`, `removeNodeProtocol`, `injectStyle`, and `skipNodeModulesBundle` are no longer recognized. They fail TypeScript type checking and are **silently ignored at runtime**, so a missed mapping on v0.23+ produces wrong output without any error. Migrating directly to v0.23+ is therefore unsafe. tsdown **v0.22.14** is the last version that still accepts these options and flags each one with a deprecation warning, making it the safe migration checkpoint. Migrate in **two stages**:

1. **Stage 1 — migrate on `tsdown@0.22.14`**: Install `tsdown@0.22.14`, migrate the config per the tables below, run a build, and resolve **every** deprecation warning by mapping each flagged tsup option to its real tsdown equivalent. The warnings are the completeness check — the migration is not done until the build produces **zero warnings**.
2. **Stage 2 — upgrade to the latest tsdown (`^0.23.0` or newer)**: Only after a warning-free build on 0.22.14. Since the config no longer uses any removed compat options, the silent-ignore behavior of v0.23+ is no longer a risk.

## Runtime Requirement

`tsdown` requires **Node.js `^22.18.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0` to run** (build-time only) — that is, Node.js 22.18+, 24.11+, or 26+. Odd-numbered and EOL release lines (e.g. Node.js 23, 25) are not supported. The bundled output can still target lower Node.js versions via the [`target`](../tsdown/references/option-target.md) option, so a library that previously supported Node.js 18 / 20 with tsup can continue to do so after migrating.

Recommended workflow when supporting Node.js 18 / 20:

- **Build with Node.js 22+ in CI**, setting an explicit `target` such as `'node18'` or `'node20'`.
- **Test the built output (or the packed tarball) on the lower Node.js versions** you need to support.

## When to Use

- Migrating a project from tsup to tsdown
- Understanding differences between tsup and tsdown options
