## What it does

The skill activates when you create, edit or debug a circuit in tscircuit, the React/TypeScript way to build PCBs. The agent drives the `tsci` CLI: searches footprints, installs registry packages, builds the project and validates it. The workflow is spelled out — clarify power rails, connectors and manufacturer limits first, pick a starting point, then write code.

Parts come from `tsci search`, with `--digikey` and `--mouser` flags when stock and supplier part numbers matter. Installation goes through `tsci add <author/pkg>` or `tsci import <query>`. For USB-C receptacles the skill prefers the builtin `<connector standard="usb_c" />` syntax over a JLCPCB import. Schematics get split into sheets and sections with `<schematicsheet>` and `<schematicsection>`, and on larger boards components are grouped by function: power, MCU, IO.

Checks run in order. `tsci check netlist` comes before placement checks, then `tsci check schematic-placement` and `tsci check placement`, and only after those `tsci build`. There is also `tsci check shorts`, which looks for unintended copper bridges and exits nonzero when it finds one. Treat that failure as real, not as a generic DRC warning: open `checks/check-shorts/bitmap.png` and fix the copper. The skill asks for the builtin autorouter and documented APIs, and a custom router only when you explicitly request one.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tscircuit/skill --skill tscircuit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tscircuit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tscircuit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tscircuit/skill --skill tscircuit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tscircuit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tscircuit/skill --skill tscircuit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tscircuit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tscircuit/skill tscircuit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tscircuit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tscircuit/skill --skill tscircuit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tscircuit/skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tscircuit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tscircuit/skill --skill tscircuit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tscircuit/skill/tree/HEAD/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a device schematic from React components
- find a footprint with supplier stock and part number
- route traces with the builtin autorouter
- catch copper shorts before sending the board to fab
- split a large schematic into sheets and sections

## Example prompts
- Build a 5V buck converter schematic in tscircuit
- Search for a USB-C receptacle with tsci search and add it
- Run tsci check placement and fix the violations

# tscircuit

You are helping the user design electronics using tscircuit (React/TypeScript) and the `tsci` CLI.

When this Skill is active:

- Prefer tscircuit’s documented primitives and CLI behavior. If something is unclear, confirm by:
  - Reading local files in the repo (e.g., `tscircuit.config.json`, `index.circuit.tsx`, `package.json`)
  - Running `tsci --help` or the specific subcommand’s `--help`
- Avoid “inventing” JSX props or CLI flags.

## Default workflow

1) Clarify requirements (if not already given)
- Board form factor / size constraints
- Power sources and voltage rails
- I/O: connectors, headers, mounting holes, mechanical constraints
- Target manufacturer constraints (trace/space, assembly, supplier)

2) Choose a starting point
- If the repo is not a tscircuit project, recommend:
  - Install CLI, then `tsci init` to bootstrap a project.
- If a form-factor template is appropriate (Arduino Shield, Raspberry Pi HAT, etc.), prefer `@tscircuit/common` templates.

3) Find and install components
- Use `tsci search "<query>"` to discover footprints and tscircuit registry packages.
- Use `tsci search --digikey "<query>"` or `tsci search --mouser "<query>"` when distributor stock and supplier part numbers matter. Both flags can be combined, and `--json` provides machine-readable results.
- For USB-C receptacles/connectors, prefer builtin syntax with `<connector standard="usb_c" />` instead of importing from JLCPCB.
- Use one of:
  - `tsci add <author/pkg>` for registry packages (installs `@tsci/*` packages)
  - `tsci import <query>` when you need to import a component from JLCPCB or the registry.
- DigiKey and Mouser search results are for part discovery; `tsci import` does not directly import from those distributors.

4) Write/modify TSX circuit code
- Keep circuits as a default-exported function that returns JSX.
- Nearly every schematic should be broken up using `<schematicsheet>` and `<schematicsection>` to organize related circuitry into clear, readable sheets and sections.
