# trpc

A rule set that steers an AI agent writing a Next.js app on tRPC v11. It keeps types flowing from server to client and keeps Zod validation in place.

## What it does

The skill casts the agent as an expert in tRPC v11, TypeScript and Next.js. It lays out a project layout with `server/routers`, `server/context.ts` and `utils/trpc.ts`, then walks through backend init with `initTRPC`, feature routers, and a client built on `createTRPCNext` plus `httpBatchLink`.

Ten practices follow: Zod on every input, routers split by domain, middleware for auth, errors raised as `TRPCError`, SuperJSON as the transformer, React Query for fetching and cache, context carrying the database connection, type-only exports to the client. A short anti-pattern list closes it out — `any` types, skipped validation, internal errors leaking to clients, server and client code mixed in one file.

TypeScript 5.7.2 or newer is required, with strict mode on. Turn strict off and the examples stop compiling: tRPC infers everything from the router, so the first procedure helper loses its types.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill trpc -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/trpc/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/trpc/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill trpc -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/trpc/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill trpc -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/trpc/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills trpc
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/trpc/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill trpc -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path trpc
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/trpc/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill trpc -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/trpc/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up tRPC v11 in a Next.js project from scratch
- split one giant router into per-feature files
- validate procedure input with Zod
- gate procedures behind auth middleware
- pass dates and Maps across the wire without hand-written serialization

## Example prompts
- Create a `user` router with `getById` and `update` procedures, validate input with Zod
- Set up `createTRPCNext` in `utils/trpc.ts` using `httpBatchLink` and SuperJSON
- Add a `protectedProcedure` that throws `TRPCError` with code `UNAUTHORIZED`

# tRPC Best Practices

You are an expert in tRPC v11, TypeScript, and Next.js development. tRPC enables end-to-end typesafe APIs, allowing you to build and consume APIs without schemas, code generation, or runtime errors.

## Requirements

- TypeScript >= 5.7.2
- Strict TypeScript mode enabled

## Project Structure

```
src/
  pages/
    _app.tsx              # createTRPCNext setup
    api/
      trpc/
        [trpc].ts         # tRPC HTTP handler
  server/
    routers/
      _app.ts             # Main router
      [feature].ts        # Feature-specific routers
    context.ts            # App context
    trpc.ts               # Procedure helpers
  utils/
    trpc.ts               # Typesafe React hooks
```

## Server-Side Setup

### Initialize tRPC Backend

Initialize tRPC backend once per application. Export reusable router and procedure helpers:

```typescript
// server/trpc.ts
import { initTRPC } from '@trpc/server';
import superjson from 'superjson';
const t = initTRPC.context<Context>().create({
  transformer: superjson,
});
export const router = t.router;
export const publicProcedure = t.procedure;
export const protectedProcedure = t.procedure.use(isAuthed);
export const adminProcedure = t.procedure.use(isAdmin);
```

### Create Feature Routers

Organize routers by feature/domain. Use Zod for input validation:

```typescript
// server/routers/user.ts
import { z } from 'zod';
import { router, publicProcedure, protectedProcedure } from '../trpc';
export const userRouter = router({
  getById: publicProcedure
    .input(z.object({ id: z.string() }))
    .query(async ({ input, ctx }) => {
      return ctx.db.user.findUnique({ where: { id: input.id } });
    }),
  update: protectedProcedure
    .input(z.object({
      name: z.string().min(1),
      email: z.string().email(),
    }))
    .mutation(async ({ input, ctx }) => {
      return ctx.db.user.update({
        where: { id: ctx.user.id },
        data: input,
      });
    }),
});
```

### Main App Router

```typescript
// server/routers/_app.ts
import { router } from '../trpc';
import { userRouter } from './user';
import { postRouter } from './post';
export const appRouter = router({
  user: userRouter,
  post: postRouter,
});
export type AppRouter = typeof appRouter;
```

## Client-Side Setup

### Configure tRPC Client

```typescript
// utils/trpc.ts
import { httpBatchLink } from '@trpc/client';
import { createTRPCNext } from '@trpc/next';
import superjson from 'superjson';
import type { AppRouter } from '../server/routers/_app';
function getBaseUrl() {
  if (typeof window !== 'undefined') return '';
  if (process.env.VERCEL_URL) return `https://${process.env.VERCEL_URL}`;
  return `http://localhost:${process.env.PORT ?? 3000}`;
}
export const trpc = createTRPCNext<AppRouter>({
  config() {
    return {
      transformer: superjson,
