## What it does

The skill organizes Amazon S3 Files troubleshooting into symptom-based categories. It guides the agent through checking mount targets across availability zones, verifying security group rules on port 2049 TCP, and testing network paths via `nc`. When dealing with access errors, it validates IAM policies for `s3files:ClientMount` and `s3files:ClientWrite`, while synchronization delays are diagnosed via `getfattr` status calls and the `PendingExports` metric.

Conflict resolution logic follows a strict rule: if a file is modified in S3 and through the file system simultaneously, S3 wins and the local version moves to `.s3files-lost+found`. If a file system gets stuck in the `creating` state, adjusting permissions on the existing resource will not help: S3 Files does not validate the IAM role trust policy on creation, forcing you to delete and recreate the file system after fixing the role.

You need AWS CLI v2 with the `s3files` subcommand, valid AWS credentials, and `amazon-efs-utils` v3.0.0 or newer. The skill forbids the agent from running mutating actions during initial verification without user approval.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill troubleshooting-s3-files -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/troubleshooting-s3-files/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/troubleshooting-s3-files/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill troubleshooting-s3-files -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/troubleshooting-s3-files/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill troubleshooting-s3-files -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/troubleshooting-s3-files/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws troubleshooting-s3-files
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/troubleshooting-s3-files/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill troubleshooting-s3-files -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/storage-skills/troubleshooting-s3-files
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/troubleshooting-s3-files/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill troubleshooting-s3-files -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/storage-skills/troubleshooting-s3-files/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- resolve mount connection timeouts caused by security group rules
- fix access denied errors and compute IAM client permissions
- diagnose file sync delays and inspect export errors via `getfattr`
- identify sync conflicts and locate files moved to `.s3files-lost+found`
- correct VPC DNS settings and ECS volume configurations

## Example prompts
- My S3 Files mount timed out when connecting from an EC2 instance
- Check why new files in S3 Files are not syncing back to the S3 bucket
- Troubleshoot access denied error when mounting s3files with IAM role

# Troubleshooting S3 Files

## Overview

Diagnoses and resolves Amazon S3 Files issues: mount failures, IAM
permissions, synchronization, conflict resolution, and performance.

For authoritative guidance, see [S3 Files Troubleshooting](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/s3-files-troubleshooting.html).

## Common Tasks

### 0. Verify Dependencies

- You MUST verify `aws` CLI is available with `s3files` subcommand support
- You MUST confirm valid AWS credentials
- You MUST ONLY check for tool existence and version — MUST NOT execute destructive or mutating commands during verification
- You MUST inform the user if any required tools are missing
- You MUST respect the user's decision to abort if tools are unavailable
- You SHOULD explain steps before executing and wait for user confirmation on write commands

### 1. Classify the Issue

| Symptom | Category |
|---|---|
| mount.s3files: command not found | A: Client Installation |
| Connection timed out during mount | B: Network/Security Group |
| Mount hangs indefinitely (no timeout) | B: Network/Security Group |
| Access denied during mount | C: IAM Permissions |
| File system stuck in "creating" | C: IAM Permissions |
| Permission denied on file operations | C: IAM Permissions |
| Files not appearing in S3 after write | D: Synchronization |
| Files in .s3files-lost+found directory | E: Conflict Resolution |
| Slow reads or high latency | F: Performance |
| NFS server error | G: Encryption/KMS |
| DNS name resolution fails | H: VPC DNS |

### 2. Category A — Client Installation

`mount.s3files: command not found` means `amazon-efs-utils` is missing or < v3.0.0.

```bash
sudo yum -y install amazon-efs-utils  # Amazon Linux
```

### 3. Category B — Network/Security Group

Connection timeout is the #1 mount failure — almost always security groups.
