# troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors

Walks an agent through a failed dbt Cloud job: run logs, git history, data checks. Useful when the error message says little or the failure comes and goes.

## What it does

The skill splits the work into stages. First it gathers run information, then classifies the error, then investigates the cause. With the dbt MCP Server available, the agent calls `list_jobs`, `list_jobs_runs` and `get_job_run_error` on its own. Without it, you hand over the debug logs from dbt Cloud and the `run_results.json` artifact — the skill builds the artifact URL from `ACCOUNT_ID` and `RUN_ID`.

Investigation branches three ways. Infrastructure errors mean checking timeouts, permissions and warehouse state. Compilation errors mean looking at recent git changes, so the project gets cloned to a temp folder and inspected with `git log` and `git diff`. Test failures get traced through the `discovering-data` skill against real data. One rule is stated flatly: do not edit a test to make it pass before you know why it failed. Worth checking against how your team handles red tests.

This is not for local dbt development — that case points to `using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering`. Install runs through `npx skills add` for Claude, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and OpenCode, and through `gh skill install` for GitHub Copilot.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --path skills/dbt/skills/troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill troubleshooting-dbt-job-errors -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- find the root cause of a failed dbt Cloud job from its run logs
- tell an infrastructure failure apart from a compilation error
- link a failure to a recent commit in models or macros
- debug intermittent job failures that will not reproduce locally
- check the data behind a failing test

## Example prompts
- Our dbt Cloud job failed after the merge — check the logs and git history, what broke?
- This test keeps failing with a vague error, dig into run_results.json and tell me why
- The job fails every few runs. Look at recent runs and figure out what they have in common

# Troubleshooting dbt Job Errors

Systematically diagnose and resolve dbt Cloud job failures using available MCP tools, CLI commands, and data investigation.

## When to Use

- dbt Cloud / dbt platform job failed and you need to find the root cause
- Intermittent job failures that are hard to reproduce
- Error messages that don't clearly indicate the problem
- Post-merge failures where a recent change may have caused the issue

**Not for:** Local dbt development errors - use the skill `using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering` instead

## The Iron Rule

**Never modify a test to make it pass without understanding why it's failing.**

A failing test is evidence of a problem. Changing the test to pass hides the problem. Investigate the root cause first.

## Rationalizations That Mean STOP

| You're Thinking... | Reality |
|-------------------|---------|
| "Just make the test pass" | The test is telling you something is wrong. Investigate first. |
| "There's a board meeting in 2 hours" | Rushing to a fix without diagnosis creates bigger problems. |
| "We've already spent 2 days on this" | Sunk cost doesn't justify skipping proper diagnosis. |
| "I'll just update the accepted values" | Are the new values valid business data or bugs? Verify first. |
| "It's probably just a flaky test" | "Flaky" means there's an overall issue. Find it. We don't allow flaky tests to stay. |

## Workflow
