## What it does

This skill provides guidance for orchestrating asynchronous jobs with Trigger.dev in TypeScript and Next.js applications. It directs the assistant to split monolithic tasks into manageable units, attach cron triggers, and handle batch workloads. For AI flows, it shows how to use OpenAI integrations with automatic retry support.

The instructions prevent typical deployment pitfalls. The configuration file `trigger.config.ts` must stay at the root of the package. Payloads require plain serializable objects, because complex instances trigger silent failures. The instructions also set queue concurrency limits and require idempotency keys to protect downstream services during retries.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill workflow-automation/trigger-dev
```

2. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add davila7/claude-code-templates --skill trigger-dev -a claude-code
```

3. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/trigger-dev/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/trigger-dev/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/trigger-dev/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/trigger-dev/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install davila7/claude-code-templates trigger-dev
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/trigger-dev/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates --path cli-tool/components/skills/workflow-automation/trigger-dev
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/trigger-dev/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/skills/workflow-automation/trigger-dev

## When to use it
- configure background tasks for Next.js applications
- run multi-minute AI generation workflows with retry mechanisms
- schedule recurring maintenance jobs via cron
- protect downstream endpoints using queue concurrency caps

## Example prompts
- Create a scheduled cron task using Trigger.dev in my Next.js project
- Write a background job that calls OpenAI and handles retries with idempotency
- Set up queue concurrency limits for our data import workflow
