# triaging-error-issues

Turns "what's broken?" into a short ranked list of PostHog errors worth a human look: new ones, spikes, and issues hitting many users. Built for a daily or on-call review.

## What it does

The skill answers "what's broken?" with a prioritized list instead of a dump of every active issue. It pulls data through PostHog MCP tools: the ranked issue list with aggregate metrics, single-issue details, sampled `$exception` events, and session recordings. The time window comes from your wording — "today" maps to `-24h`, "this week" to `-7d`.

Ranking is a choice. `first_seen` catches regressions from recent deploys, `users` surfaces what hit the most people. For the top few candidates it fetches a sample exception with a stack frame and URL, so the summary carries more than a title. Then it suggests an action: investigate, assign, suppress, or merge.

One thing to know: the skill never assigns or resolves anything on its own. You get the list, you make the call. If a project mixes browser and server SDKs, the top-by-users list is usually drowned by server-side errors, since each invocation gets a fresh `distinct_id` — narrow it with the `library` filter. And it needs access to the PostHog MCP server, or the tools simply won't fire.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill triaging-error-issues -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/triaging-error-issues/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/triaging-error-issues/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill triaging-error-issues -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/triaging-error-issues/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill triaging-error-issues -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/triaging-error-issues/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PostHog/skills triaging-error-issues
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/triaging-error-issues/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill triaging-error-issues -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PostHog/skills --path skills/omnibus/triaging-error-issues
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/triaging-error-issues/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill triaging-error-issues -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PostHog/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/omnibus/triaging-error-issues/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- get a list of new errors from the last day
- tell a spike apart from flat background noise
- find errors that hit the most users
- attach a stack frame and URL to an issue
- decide what to suppress and what to dig into

## Example prompts
- What's broken in the last 24 hours?
- Show me top errors today by users affected
- What should I look at this morning?

# Triaging error tracking issues

When a user asks "what's broken?" or wants a daily error review, the goal is a short
prioritized list of issues worth a human's attention — not a dump of every active
issue. Most projects have hundreds of active issues; the few that matter are usually
new (first seen in the last 24-48h), spiking, or affecting many distinct users.

| `posthog:query-error-tracking-issue-events` | Sampled `$exception` events with stack, URL, browser, and `$session_id`   |
| `posthog:query-session-recordings-list` | Find replays of users hitting an issue |
| `posthog:inbox-reports-list`                | Pre-curated actionable signals if the project uses Inbox                  |

## Workflow

### Step 1 — Pick a window and a signal

Read the time window from the user's wording. Defaults if unspecified:

- "Today" / "this morning" / "right now" → `dateRange: { date_from: "-24h" }`
- "This week" / "since Monday" → `-7d`
- On-call shift handoff → `-24h`

Pick what "matters" means:

- **New issues** — `orderBy: "first_seen"`, `orderDirection: "DESC"`, tight window.
  Catches regressions introduced by recent deploys.
- **High-impact** — `orderBy: "users"` ranks by distinct users affected. Better than
  raw occurrences for severity (one bot loop produces many occurrences but one user).
- **Trending** — `orderBy: "occurrences"` over a short window vs a longer baseline
  to spot spikes.

### Step 2 — Pull the candidate list

Start narrow and widen if too few issues come back:

```json
posthog:query-error-tracking-issues-list
{
  "status": "active",
  "orderBy": "users",
  "orderDirection": "DESC",
````
