# triage-issue

Takes a bug report or an error message, looks for similar Jira tickets, then offers to comment on an existing one or file a new bug.

## What it does

The skill reads the error and pulls out what is worth searching for: exception type or status code, the affected component, environment, and the symptoms users see. It then runs several JQL searches against Jira — one on the error text, one on the component, one on the symptom — since duplicates are often worded differently.

Matches come back ranked by how close they are, and nothing gets written until you pick an option. For closed tickets the skill also surfaces the fix history: who resolved it, when, and whether the bug was reopened. From there you decide whether to add details to the existing ticket, create a new one anyway, or read more first.

An Atlassian MCP server has to be connected, since the search runs through `searchJiraIssuesUsingJql`, which needs the `cloudId` of your Jira instance. Without that server and access to the project there is nothing to search — check it before installing.

## Requirements
- Works with: Atlassian, Jira

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server --skill triage-issue -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/triage-issue/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/triage-issue/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server --skill triage-issue -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/triage-issue/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server --skill triage-issue -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/triage-issue/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server triage-issue
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/triage-issue/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server --skill triage-issue -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server --path skills/triage-issue
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/triage-issue/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server --skill triage-issue -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server/tree/HEAD/skills/triage-issue/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find an existing ticket by its error text before filing a new one
- tell a recurring bug apart from a fresh report
- see who fixed a similar issue and when
- add details to an open ticket instead of opening a duplicate
- check whether a closed bug came back after the fix

## Example prompts
- Check Jira for a duplicate of this error: `Connection timeout` on mobile app login
- Search project PROJ for bugs matching `NullPointerException` in `PaymentProcessor.processRefund`
- If you find a duplicate, comment my stack trace on it instead of creating a new ticket

When an agent needs to: (1) Triage a bug report or error message, (2) Check if an issue is a duplicate, (3) Find similar past issues, (4) Create a new bug ticket with proper context, or (5) Add information to an existing ticket. Searches Jira for similar issues, identifies duplicates, checks fix history, and helps create well-structured bug reports."

# Triage Issue

## Keywords
triage bug, check duplicate, is this a duplicate, search for similar issues, create bug ticket, file a bug, report this error, triage this error, bug report, error message, similar issues, duplicate bug, who fixed this, has this been reported, search bugs, find similar bugs, create issue, file issue

## Overview

Automatically triage bug reports and error messages by searching Jira for duplicates, identifying similar past issues, and helping create well-structured bug tickets or add context to existing issues. This skill eliminates manual duplicate checking and ensures bugs are properly documented with relevant historical context.

**Use this skill when:** Users need to triage error messages, bug reports, or issues to determine if they're duplicates and take appropriate action.

---

## Workflow

Follow this 6-step process to effectively triage issues:

### Step 1: Extract Key Information

Analyze the bug report or error message to identify search terms.

#### Extract These Elements:

**Error signature:**
- Error type or exception name (e.g., "NullPointerException", "TimeoutError")
- Error code or status (e.g., "500", "404", "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED")
- Specific error message text (key phrases, not full stack trace)

**Context:**
- Component or system affected (e.g., "authentication", "payment gateway", "API")
- Environment (e.g., "production", "staging", "mobile app")
- User actions leading to error (e.g., "during login", "when uploading file")

**Symptoms:**
- Observable behavior (e.g., "page blank", "infinite loading", "data not saving")
- Impact (e.g., "users can't login", "payments failing")

#### Example Extractions:

**Input:** "Users getting 'Connection timeout' error when trying to login on mobile app"
**Extracted:**
- Error: "Connection timeout"
- Component: "login", "mobile app"
- Symptom: "can't login"

**Input:** "NullPointerException in PaymentProcessor.processRefund() line 245"
**Extracted:**
- Error: "NullPointerException"
- Component: "PaymentProcessor", "refund"
- Location: "processRefund line 245"

### Step 2: Search for Duplicates
