# travel-planner

Turns a trip idea into a day-by-day route with a budget breakdown and a packing list. Handy when you would otherwise build the spreadsheet yourself.

## What it does

This skill hands the agent a set of planning frameworks. Destination choice runs through a weighted matrix: climate, safety, budget fit, how well the place matches your interests, logistics and timing. Each factor carries its own weight, so the comparison stays honest instead of vibes-based.

Itineraries come as a timed template. Breakfast, a morning activity with address and cost, lunch, an afternoon block, downtime, dinner with a reservation note, evening. Pacing rules scale the number of activities to trip length, and multi-city routing covers linear, loop, hub-and-spoke and figure-eight shapes. One rule is blunt: no backtracking, and transit days get no activities.

The budget side splits fixed costs from daily spend, adds a contingency line, and lists where money usually leaks — shoulder season, markets over restaurants, transit passes. Packing uses quantity formulas tied to trip length plus target bag weights, with climate-specific additions. Everything here is reference material the agent reads and fills in. It does not fetch live prices, visa rules or weather, so bring those yourself or verify afterwards.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill travel-planner -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/travel-planner/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/travel-planner/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill travel-planner -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/travel-planner/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill travel-planner -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/travel-planner/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install travisjneuman/.claude travel-planner
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/travel-planner/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill travel-planner -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/travisjneuman/.claude --path skills/travel-planner
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/travel-planner/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill travel-planner -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/travisjneuman/.claude/tree/HEAD/skills/travel-planner/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- compare destinations on cost and season
- lay out a trip day by day with time slots
- estimate total and per-person spend
- route a multi-city trip without backtracking
- build a packing list for the climate and trip length

## Example prompts
- Plan a 7-day Lisbon itinerary for two people under 1500 USD each
- Compare Tbilisi and Yerevan on climate, safety and accommodation cost
- Build a two-week packing list for a cold climate

# Travel Planner

Comprehensive travel planning frameworks for destination research, itinerary building, budget tracking, and logistics coordination.

## Destination Research Methodology

### Destination Evaluation Matrix

| Factor | Weight | Assessment Criteria |
|--------|--------|-------------------|
| **Climate** | 15% | Temperature range, rainfall, best season, weather risks |
| **Safety** | 20% | Travel advisories, crime index, health risks, political stability |
| **Budget Fit** | 20% | Cost of living index, flight cost, accommodation range |
| **Interest Alignment** | 25% | Activities, culture, cuisine, nature, nightlife match |
| **Logistics** | 10% | Visa requirements, flight duration, language barrier |
| **Timing** | 10% | Peak vs shoulder vs off-season, local events, holidays |

### Research Protocol

```
1. DEFINE: Trip purpose, travel dates, group size, budget ceiling
2. SHORTLIST: 3-5 destinations matching purpose and budget
3. EVALUATE: Score each destination on the matrix above (1-10 per factor)
4. VALIDATE: Check visa requirements, travel advisories, vaccination needs
5. DECIDE: Weighted score comparison, gut-check alignment
```

### Climate and Timing Guide

| Season Strategy | Benefit | Trade-off |
|----------------|---------|-----------|
| **Peak season** | Best weather, full services | Highest prices, crowds |
| **Shoulder season** | Good weather, fewer crowds | Some closures possible |
| **Off-season** | Lowest prices, authentic feel | Weather risk, limited services |
