## What it does

The skill lays out how execution quality works in U.S. equities and how to check it. It covers the best execution duty under FINRA Rule 5310 for broker-dealers and the fiduciary duty for RIAs, plus the factors that go into the analysis: price against the NBBO, speed, likelihood of execution, settlement, market impact and total cost.

A separate section handles market structure — exchanges, ECNs, dark pools, maker-taker versus taker-maker pricing, the Reg NMS Order Protection Rule and venue fee schedules. There is material on VWAP, TWAP, implementation shortfall and POV algorithms, smart order routing, bid-ask spread decomposition, information leakage, PFOF arrangements and Rule 605/606 reports.

The practical side is about reviews. FINRA expects a regular and rigorous review, typically quarterly, while an RIA with trading discretion should review at least annually, with quarterly as the better practice. Findings have to be documented in writing and shown to senior management or a governance committee — that paperwork is what SEC and FINRA examiners ask for. If a review turns up deficiencies, the firm has to act: change routing destinations, adjust order handling procedures or renegotiate execution quality commitments. The skill does not replace legal advice, so edge cases are worth checking against the rule text itself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill trade-execution -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/trade-execution/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/trade-execution/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill trade-execution -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/trade-execution/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill trade-execution -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/trade-execution/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JoelLewis/finance_skills trade-execution
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/trade-execution/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill trade-execution -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills --path plugins/trading-operations/skills/trade-execution
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/trade-execution/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill trade-execution -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/trading-operations/skills/trade-execution/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- assess whether a firm meets its best execution duty under FINRA Rule 5310
- choose between VWAP, TWAP, implementation shortfall and POV for a given order
- build pre-trade estimates and post-trade measurement in a TCA framework
- decompose the bid-ask spread and estimate market impact
- prepare materials and minutes for a best execution committee meeting

## Example prompts
- Help me assess whether our order routing meets FINRA Rule 5310 requirements
- Which execution algorithm fits a large order in an illiquid name — VWAP or implementation shortfall?
- Draft the structure for a quarterly best execution committee report with venue-by-venue data

# Trade Execution

## Core Concepts

### Best Execution Obligation
Best execution is the duty to seek the most favorable terms reasonably available for client transactions under the circumstances. The obligation applies differently depending on the entity type and regulatory framework.

**Broker-dealer obligations (FINRA Rule 5310):** FINRA Rule 5310 (Best Execution and Interpositioning) requires broker-dealers to use reasonable diligence to ascertain the best market for a security and to buy or sell in that market so that the resultant price to the customer is as favorable as possible under prevailing market conditions. "Reasonable diligence" involves consideration of:

- The character of the market for the security (e.g., price, volatility, and relative liquidity)
- The size and type of transaction
- The number of markets checked
- The accessibility of the quotation
- The terms and conditions of the order as communicated to the broker-dealer
