## What it does

The skill runs the Python script `price_tracker.py` to look up one symbol, several symbols, or a predefined watchlist. Available groups include `top10`, `defi`, `layer2`, `stablecoins`, and `memecoins`. Historical requests accept a period or custom dates. Results can be returned as a table or JSON, while OHLCV history can be exported to `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/data/` as CSV.

Install `requests`, `pandas`, and `yfinance` before running the script. Without those packages, it will not start. `python-dotenv` can be added for API key handling, and a CoinGecko key can be stored in `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/config/settings.yaml` or exposed through `COINGECKO_API_KEY`. The skill checks cached data first, retries with backoff, and can fall back to `yfinance` when the primary request fails.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace --skill tracking-crypto-prices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tracking-crypto-prices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tracking-crypto-prices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace --skill tracking-crypto-prices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tracking-crypto-prices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace --skill tracking-crypto-prices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tracking-crypto-prices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace tracking-crypto-prices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tracking-crypto-prices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace --skill tracking-crypto-prices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace --path skills/.curated/tracking-crypto-prices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tracking-crypto-prices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jeremylongshore/tons-of-skills-marketplace --skill tracking-crypto-prices -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- check the live price of BTC or several coins
- scan a predefined `top10` or `defi` watchlist
- retrieve a price series for a period or date range
- export historical OHLCV data as CSV
- return market data in machine-readable JSON

## Example prompts
- Check the current BTC price with `price_tracker.py`.
- Scan the `defi` watchlist and return the result as JSON.
- Export ETH price history for `90d` to CSV.

# Tracking Crypto Prices

## Contents

[Overview](#overview) | [Prerequisites](#prerequisites) | [Instructions](#instructions) | [Output](#output) | [Error Handling](#error-handling) | [Examples](#examples) | [Resources](#resources)

## Overview

Foundation skill providing real-time and historical cryptocurrency price data for 10,000+ coins. This is the data layer for the crypto plugin ecosystem -- 10+ other skills depend on it for price information.

## Prerequisites

1. Install dependencies: `pip install requests pandas yfinance`
2. Optional: `pip install python-dotenv` for API key management
3. Optional: Get free API key from https://www.coingecko.com/en/api for higher rate limits
4. Add API key to `${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/config/settings.yaml` or set `COINGECKO_API_KEY` env var

## Instructions

1. Check current prices for one or more symbols:

   ```bash
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol BTC
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbols BTC,ETH,SOL
   ```

2. Use watchlists to scan predefined groups (available: `top10`, `defi`, `layer2`, `stablecoins`, `memecoins`):

   ```bash
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --watchlist top10     # Top 10 by market cap
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --watchlist defi      # DeFi tokens
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --watchlist layer2    # Layer 2 tokens
   ```

3. Fetch historical data by period or custom date range:

   ```bash
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol BTC --period 30d
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol BTC --period 90d --output csv
   python ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol ETH --start 2024-01-01 --end 2024-12-31  # 2024 full year
   ```
