## What it does

The skill walks a team through day 2 afternoon of a Foundation Sprint, once Approach Options is signed and 3–7 candidates are on the table. Each approach gets scored against four classic lenses — customer, pragmatic, growth, money — plus at least one the team wrote itself. The output is a single artifact in six sections: lens charts, pattern review, top bet, backup plan, and decision rationale.

Scoring is done as dots on a 2x2 grid, not numbers. The author is blunt about this: lenses are a sense-making tool, not mathematical truth, and arguing over 3.7 versus 3.8 means the team lost the plot. The pattern review pulls out approaches that land in the top half of three or more lenses, and those that lose just as consistently. The biggest trade-off gets named out loud, otherwise the Decider picks by vibes.

The backup plan has to differ from the top bet in strategic direction. If the two look alike, the skill asks for a more distinct alternative. Two things must be ready beforehand: a signed Approach Options and at least one custom lens, or the skill will prompt the team to generate one first. It also assumes the team can still think clearly — the author suggests postponing to the next morning rather than rushing a tired group.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills --path skills/tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-magic-lenses -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- run a candidate set through four classic lenses and one custom lens
- spot approaches that win or lose consistently across lenses
- name the biggest trade-off instead of picking by feel
- lock in a backup plan in case the top bet fails validation
- write down why one bet beats the other

## Example prompts
- Run the approaches through magic lenses and show where they contradict each other
- Do the pattern review: who is consistently on top, who drops out
- Name the top bet and the backup plan with the rationale

# Foundation Sprint Magic Lenses

Day 2 afternoon of a Foundation Sprint. The team evaluates each candidate approach from multiple perspectives, surfaces contradictions, and produces a top bet plus a backup plan. The Decider names both; without an explicit backup, invalidation of the top bet sends the team back to ambiguous debate.

Family contract: [`docs/reference/skill-families/foundation-sprint-skills-contract.md`](../../docs/reference/skill-families/foundation-sprint-skills-contract.md). This skill is a member of `foundation-sprint-skills`.

## When to Use

- Day 2 afternoon of a Foundation Sprint.
- Approach Options is signed; the team has 3-7 candidate approaches advancing.
- The team has at least 1 team-specific custom lens prepared (per ratified spec decision; classic lenses alone are insufficient).
