## What it does

The skill walks a team through six steps in 150 minutes. First everyone writes 3-5 differentiator candidates in silence, duplicates get clustered, and 8-15 candidates stay on the board. Each one is then scored 1-5 on three axes: would the customer notice it, can this team deliver it, how hard is it to copy. The sum cuts the list down to 5-7.

Two differentiators are picked from those through `tool-note-and-vote`. Both have to be observable to the customer and actually deliverable, not aspirational. Those two become the axes of a 2x2 chart, with the competitor set from Basics plotted on it, including the do-nothing option. If the open space sits too far from where competitors cluster, the team may be drifting into a niche customers do not recognise. If the position overlaps a strong competitor, the differentiation is not strong enough.

Steps 5 and 6 produce 3-5 decision principles and the Mini Manifesto. Principles are rules for future product calls, not marketing copy. The Decider drafts the manifesto, and it states plainly what the product is NOT. The skill needs a signed Basics artifact: without a stable frame of customer, problem and competitors there is nothing to differentiate against. If the team already picked its differentiators and only wants ratification, this is the wrong tool — it is built for a real decision.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills --path skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn a Basics frame into a concrete product position
- drop differentiators customers never notice
- pick two differentiators by vote instead of argument
- plot competitors on a 2x2 chart and find open space
- write rules that guide future product calls

## Example prompts
- Run the tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation skill: Basics is signed, starting the afternoon differentiation block
- Score these differentiator candidates on the three axes and show which ones make the top cut
- Build the 2x2 chart from the two chosen differentiators and plot the competitors from Basics

# Foundation Sprint Differentiation

Day 1 afternoon of a Foundation Sprint. The team converts the morning's Basics frame (customer, problem, advantage, competitors) into a defensible strategic position. The output is a one-page Mini Manifesto that the team and Decider sign as the Day 1 strategic summary.
