## What it does

The skill produces the document a team and its Decider sign off on as the contract for the next five days. It has nine sections: the challenge statement and why-now, 2–4 sprint questions, Decider attendance windows, the roster with role assignments, a customer recruiting plan, the prototype medium decision, interview format, logistics, and success criteria.

Run it after `tool-design-sprint-readiness` returns Go, or Conditional Go with the preconditions cleared. Inputs are the readiness verdict and recommendations, the challenge description, the team roster, the recruiting source and plan, the format (in-person, remote or hybrid) and logistics constraints. A Wait verdict is a stop sign — the brief cannot fix an unready team.

The brief has to fit on two pages. When it grows past that, the fix is sharper sprint questions and a firmer prototype medium decision, not more text. A canonical structure sits in `references/TEMPLATE.md`, and `references/EXAMPLE.md` shows a filled brief for the Brainshelf book catalog.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-design-sprint-brief -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tool-design-sprint-brief/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tool-design-sprint-brief/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-design-sprint-brief -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tool-design-sprint-brief/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-design-sprint-brief -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tool-design-sprint-brief/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills tool-design-sprint-brief
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tool-design-sprint-brief/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-design-sprint-brief -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills --path skills/tool-design-sprint-brief
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tool-design-sprint-brief/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill tool-design-sprint-brief -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- lock the challenge and sprint questions before Monday morning
- assign team roles and block Decider attendance windows
- commit a recruiting plan, incentive budget and Friday schedule
- pick the prototype medium and write down the rationale
- fit the five-day contract onto two pages

## Example prompts
- build the design sprint brief from our challenge and team roster
- check that the readiness preconditions are closed, then draft the brief
- write a two-page brief with the recruiting plan and success criteria

# Design Sprint Brief

Produce the brief that aligns the team on challenge, sprint questions, participants, customer recruiting, prototype medium, interview format, logistics, and success criteria before Monday begins. A well-built brief prevents Monday morning from opening with re-litigation of "what are we testing this week?"; a missing or vague brief almost guarantees it.

Family contract: [`docs/reference/skill-families/design-sprint-skills-contract.md`](../../docs/reference/skill-families/design-sprint-skills-contract.md). This skill is a member of `design-sprint-skills`.

## When to Use

- The readiness verdict from `tool-design-sprint-readiness` is Go (or Conditional Go with preconditions cleared).
- The sprint has dates blocked on calendars and you need the artifact that names what the sprint is for.
- The team has customer recruiting active and you need to commit a recruiting plan, honorarium budget, and Friday schedule before recruiting closes.
