# tmux-cli

This skill lets an agent work with CLI agents and scripts in other tmux panes. Use it for shell commands, exit-code checks, and pane-to-pane communication.

## What it does

tmux-cli lets an agent reach CLI agents or scripts running in other tmux panes. The `tmux-cli execute` command runs a shell command and returns its output together with an exit code. A pane can be selected directly, and a timeout can be supplied for longer operations.

Agent-to-agent communication follows a different flow: use `send`, then `wait_idle`, and finally `capture`. The `execute` command is for shell work only, so it should not be used as a chat channel. The skill relies on the `claude-code-tools` package; install it with `uv tool install claude-code-tools` when `tmux-cli` cannot be found.

A test run can look like `tmux-cli execute "make test" --pane=2`. For a named pane with a time limit, use `tmux-cli execute "npm install" --pane=ops:1.3 --timeout=60`. Without `claude-code-tools`, the command will not start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pchalasani/claude-code-tools --skill tmux-cli -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tmux-cli/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tmux-cli/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pchalasani/claude-code-tools --skill tmux-cli -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tmux-cli/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pchalasani/claude-code-tools --skill tmux-cli -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tmux-cli/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pchalasani/claude-code-tools tmux-cli
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tmux-cli/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pchalasani/claude-code-tools --skill tmux-cli -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pchalasani/claude-code-tools --path plugins/tmux-cli/skills/tmux-cli
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tmux-cli/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pchalasani/claude-code-tools --skill tmux-cli -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- run a build in another tmux pane
- check whether tests returned a failure
- stop multi-step automation after an error
- send a message to another CLI agent
- collect output from a neighbouring pane

## Example prompts
- Run `make test` in pane `2` with `tmux-cli` and report its exit code.
- Execute `npm install` in pane `ops:1.3` with a `60`-second timeout.
- Communicate with the other CLI agent in a tmux pane using `send`, wait for it to become idle, then collect the result with `capture`.

## Instructions

Use the `tmux-cli` command to communicate with other CLI Agents or Scripts in
other tmux panes. Do `tmux-cli --help` to see how to use it!

This command depends on installing the `claude-code-tools`. If you get an error
indicating that the command is not available, ask the user to install it using:
`uv tool install claude-code-tools`.

## Key Commands

### Execute with Exit Code Detection

Use `tmux-cli execute` when you need to know if a shell command succeeded or
failed:

```bash
tmux-cli execute "make test" --pane=2
# Returns JSON: {"output": "...", "exit_code": 0}
tmux-cli execute "npm install" --pane=ops:1.3 --timeout=60
# Returns exit_code=0 on success, non-zero on failure, -1 on timeout
```

This is useful for:

- Running builds and knowing if they passed
- Running tests and detecting pass/fail
- Multi-step automation that should abort on failure

**Note**: `execute` is for shell commands only, not for agent-to-agent chat.
For communicating with another Claude Code instance, use `send` + `wait_idle` +
`capture` instead.
