## What it does

The skill treats Three.js as the engine and R3F as the React renderer. It ships decision tables for picking a tool, scene setup patterns, and notes on the hooks `useFrame`, `useThree`, `useLoader` and `useGraph`, plus a list of drei components: `Environment`, `Float`, `Text3D`, `useGLTF`, `MeshTransmissionMaterial`, `PresentationControls`, `Instances`. Separate sections cover postprocessing with `@react-three/postprocessing` and performance work such as instancing, LOD and `frameloop="demand"`.

Versions are pinned to a verification date: `three` r185, `@react-three/fiber` 9.x, `@react-three/drei` 10.x, `@react-three/postprocessing` 3.x. R3F 9 is React 19 only, with a declared peer range of `>=19 <19.3`. React 18 projects stay on R3F 8 and drei 9, so check the React major before letting the agent scaffold anything — otherwise it pulls in a version that will not install. `WebGLRenderer` is still the default; `WebGPURenderer` with TSL is opt-in through an async `gl` callback.

A "Do Not" section lists four common mistakes: `setState` inside `useFrame`, allocations in the render loop, missing `dispose` calls for textures and geometries, and re-rendering the Canvas parent. Each one comes as a bad/good pair. Target metrics are under 100 draw calls, under 1M triangles, 60fps on a mid-range GPU.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill threejs-r3f -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/threejs-r3f/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/threejs-r3f/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill threejs-r3f -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/threejs-r3f/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill threejs-r3f -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/threejs-r3f/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AThevon/genjutsu threejs-r3f
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/threejs-r3f/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill threejs-r3f -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu --path skills/_jutsu/threejs-r3f
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/threejs-r3f/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill threejs-r3f -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu/tree/HEAD/skills/_jutsu/threejs-r3f/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a React Three Fiber scene without extra re-renders
- add Bloom and chromatic aberration postprocessing
- choose between R3F, plain Three.js and CSS transforms
- stop texture and geometry leaks on unmount
- speed up a scene with instancing and LOD

## Example prompts
- Set up an R3F scene with OrbitControls and an HDRI environment
- Why is my fps dropping in useFrame? Check it against the skill rules
- Add an EffectComposer with Bloom to the current scene

# Three.js & React Three Fiber

> 3D on the web. Three.js is the engine, R3F is the React renderer.
> Concise rules here. Deep-dive in `references/`.
>
> **Versions:** `three` r185 (`0.185.x`) · `@react-three/fiber` 9.x · `@react-three/drei` 10.x · `@react-three/postprocessing` 3.x.
> **R3F 9 is React 19 only** - its declared peer range is `react` / `react-dom` `>=19 <19.3` (drei 10 asks `^19`). React 18 projects must stay on R3F 8 + drei 9. Check the installed React major before scaffolding.
> **Renderers:** `WebGLRenderer` is still R3F's default. `WebGPURenderer` + TSL is shipped (not flagged) and self-falls-back to WebGL 2, but three's docs call it "the new alternative of `WebGLRenderer`", not the default. Opt in with an async `gl` callback:
> ```tsx
> import * as THREE from 'three/webgpu'
> <Canvas gl={async (props) => { const r = new THREE.WebGPURenderer(props as any); await r.init(); return r }} />
> ```

---

## When to Use What

| Need | Tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full 3D scene (models, lights, physics) | R3F + drei | Declarative, React-friendly, ecosystem |
| Vanilla 3D (no React) | Three.js direct | Lighter, no React overhead |
| Simple 3D transforms on UI | CSS `transform3d` | GPU-composited, no WebGL context |
| 2D particles / generative | Canvas 2D | Simpler API, less GPU overhead |
| Shader-only visuals (no scene graph) | Raw WebGL / ShaderMaterial | Maximum control, minimal abstraction |

---

## Scene Setup Patterns

```tsx
import { Canvas } from '@react-three/fiber'
import { Environment, OrbitControls } from '@react-three/drei'
import { Suspense } from 'react'
<Canvas camera={{ position: [0, 2, 5], fov: 45 }} dpr={[1, 2]} gl={{ antialias: true }}>
  <Suspense fallback={null}>
    <Environment preset="studio" />
    <OrbitControls makeDefault />
    <Scene />
  </Suspense>
</Canvas>
```

**Rules:**
- Always wrap scene content in `<Suspense>` -- loaders (GLTF, textures, HDRI) need it
- Set `dpr={[1, 2]}` to clamp pixel ratio (Retina without melting GPUs)
- Keep the Canvas parent component minimal -- re-renders propagate into the scene
