# threejs-game

Locks in a project layout and four core modules for building 3D browser games with Three.js. Useful when the agent scaffolds a scene and game loop from scratch.

## What it does

The skill spells out the directory structure every project should follow: `core/` with the `Game.js` orchestrator, an `EventBus.js` pub/sub singleton, `GameState.js` and a `Constants.js` file holding all config values. Then come `systems/`, `gameplay/`, `level/` and `ui/`. Modules never import each other for communication — events like `player:hit` or `game:over` carry the messages instead.

The stack is fixed: Three.js at `three@0.183.0+` with ESM imports, Vite for builds, npm, JavaScript. For a single HTML file with no build step the skill shows import maps with the version pinned in the URL. `WebGLRenderer` is the default; you move to `WebGPURenderer` when you need TSL materials or compute shaders, which changes the import path to `three/webgpu` and makes init async.

Three companion files ship with it: `core-patterns.md` with the full code for the core modules, `tsl-guide.md` on Three.js Shading Language, and `input-patterns.md` covering gyroscope input, a virtual joystick and a unified analog input system. The skill asks you to slow down and not skip validation steps, and to profile before optimizing. Measured before-and-after numbers live in the separate `threejs-perf` skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill threejs-game -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/threejs-game/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/threejs-game/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill threejs-game -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/threejs-game/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill threejs-game -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/threejs-game/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PlayableIntelligence/game-creator threejs-game
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/threejs-game/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill threejs-game -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --path skills/threejs-game
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/threejs-game/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill threejs-game -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PlayableIntelligence/game-creator/tree/HEAD/skills/threejs-game/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold the folder layout for a new 3D game
- wire modules through an event bus instead of direct imports
- keep balance numbers and asset paths in one constants file
- make restarts clean with no leaked geometries or listeners
- decide between WebGLRenderer and WebGPURenderer

## Example prompts
- Scaffold a new Three.js 3D game using the skill's architecture
- Add a collision system to the game via PhysicsSystem
- Switch the materials to TSL and set up WebGPURenderer

# Three.js Game Development

You are an expert Three.js game developer. Follow these opinionated patterns when building 3D browser games.

> **Reference**: See `reference/llms.txt` (quick guide) and `reference/llms-full.txt` (full API + TSL) for official Three.js LLM documentation. Prefer patterns from those files when they conflict with this skill.

## Performance Notes

- Take your time with each step. Quality is more important than speed.
- Do not skip validation steps — they catch issues early.
- Read the full context of each file before making changes.
- Profile before optimizing. The bottleneck is rarely where you think.

## Reference Files

For detailed reference, see companion files in this directory:
- `core-patterns.md` — Full EventBus, GameState, Constants, and Game.js orchestrator code
- `tsl-guide.md` — Three.js Shading Language reference (NodeMaterial classes, when to use TSL)
- `input-patterns.md` — Gyroscope input, virtual joystick, unified analog InputSystem, input priority system

For performance optimization patterns with measured before/after evidence, see the **threejs-perf** skill (`skills/threejs-perf/SKILL.md`).

## Tech Stack

- **Renderer**: Three.js (`three@0.183.0+`, ESM imports)
- **Build Tool**: Vite
- **Language**: JavaScript (not TypeScript) for game templates — TypeScript optional
- **Package Manager**: npm

## Project Setup

When scaffolding a new Three.js game:

```bash
mkdir <game-name> && cd <game-name>
npm init -y
npm install three@^0.183.0
npm install -D vite
```

Create `vite.config.js`:

```js
import { defineConfig } from 'vite';
export default defineConfig({
  root: '.',
  publicDir: 'public',
  server: { port: 3000, open: true },
  build: { outDir: 'dist' },
});
```

Add to `package.json` scripts:

```json
{
  "type": "module",
  "scripts": {
    "dev": "vite",
    "build": "vite build",
    "preview": "vite preview"
  }
}
```

## Modern Import Patterns

### Vite / npm (default — used in our templates)

```js
import * as THREE from 'three';
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the aabb5eddad57baa2 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
