## What it does

The skill packs 120+ Three.js rules into 18 categories, ordered by impact — from project setup down to debugging. Your agent pulls them in when you write scene code, chase memory leaks, or touch GLSL and TSL shaders. It triggers on work involving geometries, materials, textures, lighting, and WebGL or WebGPU rendering.

Rules carry prefixes: `setup-` covers import maps and `renderer.setAnimationLoop()`, `memory-` covers disposing geometries, materials and render targets, `render-` covers a single `requestAnimationFrame` loop and the pixel ratio cap, `drawcall-` covers InstancedMesh and BatchedMesh. Then come geometry, materials, asset compression, lighting and shadows, scene graph, shaders, WebGPU, Core Web Vitals, physics, WebXR, post-processing and mobile.

The content compiles official Three.js guidelines from the `llms` branch plus the 100 Three.js Tips collection by Utsubo. It targets Three.js 0.182.0+. On an older release of the library, some WebGPU and TSL advice won't apply — worth checking your version before letting the agent rewrite code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emalorenzo/three-agent-skills --skill three-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/three-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/three-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emalorenzo/three-agent-skills --skill three-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/three-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emalorenzo/three-agent-skills --skill three-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/three-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install emalorenzo/three-agent-skills three-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/three-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emalorenzo/three-agent-skills --skill three-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/emalorenzo/three-agent-skills --path skills/three-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/three-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emalorenzo/three-agent-skills --skill three-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/emalorenzo/three-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/three-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- track down a memory leak from dynamically created textures
- cut the number of draw calls per frame
- pick between WebGLRenderer and WebGPURenderer
- shrink model downloads with Draco or Meshopt
- set up shadows without tanking the frame rate

## Example prompts
- review my Three.js scene against the skill rules and point out where memory leaks
- rewrite this render loop: drop the allocations and keep one setAnimationLoop
- should this be an InstancedMesh instead of a hundred separate meshes?
