## What it does

This skill covers building a conversation list in assistant-ui when one in-memory thread is not enough. It ships three primitive namespaces (`ThreadListPrimitive`, `ThreadListItemPrimitive`, `ThreadListItemMorePrimitive`), the `useAui` and `useAuiState` hooks, and the `threads.selectionChanged` event. Ready-made elements `ThreadList` and `ThreadListSidebar` come with it.

The element installs with `npx assistant-ui@latest add thread-list`, which writes `components/assistant-ui/elements/thread-list.aui.tsx`. Then pick where threads live: `AssistantCloud` for managed auth and persistence, `RemoteThreadListRuntime` for your own backend, or `ExternalStoreThreadListAdapter`. The cloud path needs a `baseUrl` from an environment variable.

\`ThreadListSidebar` already renders the runtime-connected list, so mounting `ThreadList` inside it gives you two lists on screen. Both need an `AssistantRuntimeProvider` ancestor. Stale thread state after sign-in is covered in `references/remote-adapter.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill thread-list -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/thread-list/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/thread-list/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill thread-list -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/thread-list/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill thread-list -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/thread-list/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install assistant-ui/skills thread-list
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/thread-list/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill thread-list -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills --path assistant-ui/skills/thread-list
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/thread-list/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill thread-list -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- add a sidebar with multiple conversations
- switch between threads and start new ones
- rename, archive and delete conversations
- wire up cloud persistence with authentication
- build a custom list from primitives instead of the installed element

## Example prompts
- install thread-list and show the conversation sidebar
- build a custom list with ThreadListPrimitive, search and grouping
- threads go stale after login — fix it with the remote adapter

# assistant-ui Thread List

**Always consult [assistant-ui.com/llms.txt](https://www.assistant-ui.com/llms.txt) for the latest API.**

A runtime starts with one in memory conversation. Add a thread list only when people need to create, select, and manage multiple conversations. Choose the managed cloud path, a backend adapter, or an external store before choosing the UI.

## Quick Start

Install the runtime connected list with `npx assistant-ui@latest add thread-list`. It creates `components/assistant-ui/elements/thread-list.aui.tsx`. Pass an `AssistantCloud` instance to `useChatRuntime` for managed threads, then render the list and active thread beneath the provider.

```tsx
"use client";
import { AssistantRuntimeProvider } from "@assistant-ui/react";
import { useChatRuntime } from "@assistant-ui/ai-sdk";
import { AssistantCloud } from "assistant-cloud";
import { Thread } from "@/components/assistant-ui/elements/thread.aui";
import { ThreadList } from "@/components/assistant-ui/elements/thread-list.aui";
const cloud = new AssistantCloud({
  baseUrl: process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_ASSISTANT_BASE_URL,
  anonymous: true,
});
export function Chat() {
  const runtime = useChatRuntime({ cloud });
  return (
    <AssistantRuntimeProvider runtime={runtime}>
      <div className="flex h-dvh">
        <aside className="w-72 border-e p-2">
          <ThreadList />
        </aside>
        <main className="min-w-0 flex-1">
          <Thread />
        </main>
      </div>
    </AssistantRuntimeProvider>
  );
}
```
