## What it does

The skill sends an audio synthesis task to the Sonilo backend and returns the saved file path. Prompts take between 1 and 2000 characters describing physical actions and materials. Duration ranges from 0.5 to 180 seconds, falling back to Sonilo's 8-second default when omitted. Supported formats include `wav`, `mp3`, `flac`, and `aac` (`.m4a` by default).

Execution relies on either Sonilo MCP tools or the `sonilo` CLI transport. Authentication requires `SONILO_API_KEY`, a hosted OAuth plugin, or credentials from `sonilo login`. The tool polls the async task until completion so you do not have to manage webhooks manually.

Each generation makes a billable API call. Manual retries incur new charges, so refine prompt details instead of rerolling. For full musical tracks or background scores, use `text-to-music` instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sonilo-ai/skills --skill text-to-sfx -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/text-to-sfx/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/text-to-sfx/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sonilo-ai/skills --skill text-to-sfx -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/text-to-sfx/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sonilo-ai/skills --skill text-to-sfx -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/text-to-sfx/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sonilo-ai/skills text-to-sfx
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/text-to-sfx/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sonilo-ai/skills --skill text-to-sfx -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sonilo-ai/skills --path text-to-sfx
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/text-to-sfx/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sonilo-ai/skills --skill text-to-sfx -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sonilo-ai/skills/tree/HEAD/text-to-sfx/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate UI clicks and notification chimes from text
- synthesize ambient background audio like distant rain
- produce retro game sound effects and foley impacts
- save generated audio clips in WAV, FLAC, or MP3 formats

## Example prompts
- Generate a mechanical switch click sound effect lasting 0.5 seconds in wav format
- Create a 6-second sound of thunder rumbling in the distance with light rain
- Make an 8-bit retro jump sound effect

description: Generate a sound effect from a text description using Sonilo — a UI chime, a whoosh, an impact, ambience, a stylized cue — when there is no video to match. Use when the user describes the sound they want in words, with or without a length. For SFX matched to footage, use the video-to-sfx skill; for music, use text-to-music.

# Sonilo Text-to-SFX

Generate a single sound effect from a text description — no video involved. The
prompt IS the input, so describe the action and materials directly. Generation
runs as an async task on the backend; the tool polls internally and hands back
the saved file.

> **Setup:** See the [setup-api-key](../setup-api-key) skill.

> ⚠️ **Cost:** this tool makes an API call that may incur charges. Only call it when explicitly requested.

> **Matching sound to footage instead?** Use [video-to-sfx](../video-to-sfx) — it reads the cut and can pin sounds to specific moments, which a text prompt cannot do.

## Transport: MCP or CLI

Pick one at the start of the session and stay on it. Do not mix the two inside
a single job, and do not announce the choice.

1. **Sonilo MCP tools visible in this session** (`text_to_sfx` and friends) — use them. This is the preferred path: it needs no shell, and it is the only one that survives a very long generation. If a call fails to authenticate — rather than failing on its inputs — this transport is not usable in this session: go to 2 instead of retrying it.
2. **No usable Sonilo MCP tools, but `sonilo account` exits 0** — use the CLI commands below. Same API, same account, same credential file. Probe with `sonilo account`, not `sonilo whoami`: whoami exits 0 even when signed out, so it cannot tell the two states apart.
3. **Neither** — stop and run the [setup-api-key](../setup-api-key) skill. Do not call `api.sonilo.com` with curl to work around it; both transports handle uploads, polling and retries that a bare request does not.

## Quick Start

### MCP tool call (recommended)

```
text_to_sfx(
    prompt="Thunder rumbling in the distance with light rain",
    duration=6
)
```

### Python (`pip install sonilo`)

```python
from sonilo import Sonilo
client = Sonilo()  # reads SONILO_API_KEY
sfx = client.text_to_sfx.generate(prompt="Thunder rumbling in the distance with light rain", duration=6)
sfx.save("thunder.m4a")
```

### JavaScript / TypeScript (`npm install sonilo`)

```ts
import { SoniloClient } from "sonilo";
const client = new SoniloClient(); // reads SONILO_API_KEY
const sfx = await client.textToSfx.generate({
  prompt: "Thunder rumbling in the distance with light rain",
  duration: 6,
});
```

### CLI (`npm install -g sonilo-cli` or `pip install sonilo-cli`)

```bash
````
