## What it does

The skill turns a JWT assessment into a sequence of steps. First the agent decodes header, payload and signature, then moves to attacks: the `none` algorithm, RS256-to-HS256 confusion signed with the public key, HMAC secret cracking, injection through `jku`, `kid` and `x5u`, and finally token lifetime and revocation checks.

The tooling is named up front: `jwt_tool`, the JSON Web Token extension for Burp Suite Professional, `PyJWT` for custom scripts, `hashcat` and `jq`. Some steps ship as ready commands, others as short Python snippets. Secret cracking pulls a wordlist such as `rockyou.txt`, so that step goes nowhere without one.

Written authorization for the target comes first in the skill, and it should. You also need a valid JWT from the application — there is nothing to test otherwise. No signed agreement means the rest of the workflow is off the table.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-jwt-token-security -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/testing-jwt-token-security/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/testing-jwt-token-security/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-jwt-token-security -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/testing-jwt-token-security/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-jwt-token-security -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/testing-jwt-token-security/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills testing-jwt-token-security
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/testing-jwt-token-security/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-jwt-token-security -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --path skills/testing-jwt-token-security
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/testing-jwt-token-security/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-jwt-token-security -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/testing-jwt-token-security/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check whether the server accepts a token with the `none` algorithm
- crack a weak HMAC secret from a wordlist
- reproduce RS256-to-HS256 algorithm confusion
- test `kid`, `jku` and `x5u` injection paths
- see whether the API rejects an expired token

## Example prompts
- Decode this JWT and show me the header and payload
- Test the target for the algorithm none attack and report the status code
- Try to crack the HMAC secret of this token with a wordlist

# Testing JWT Token Security

## When to Use

- During authorized penetration tests when the application uses JWT for authentication or authorization
- When assessing API security where JWTs are passed as Bearer tokens or in cookies
- For evaluating SSO implementations that use JWT/JWS/JWE tokens
- When testing OAuth 2.0 or OpenID Connect flows that issue JWTs
- During security audits of microservice architectures using JWT for inter-service authentication

## Prerequisites

- **Authorization**: Written penetration testing agreement for the target
- **jwt_tool**: JWT attack toolkit (`pip install jwt_tool` or `git clone https://github.com/ticarpi/jwt_tool.git`)
- **Burp Suite Professional**: With JSON Web Token extension from BApp Store
- **Python PyJWT**: For scripting custom JWT attacks (`pip install pyjwt`)
- **Hashcat**: For brute-forcing HMAC secrets (`apt install hashcat`)
- **jq**: For JSON processing
- **Target JWT**: A valid JWT token from the application

## Workflow

### Step 1: Decode and Analyze the JWT Structure

Extract and examine the header, payload, and signature components.

```bash
# Decode JWT parts (base64url decode)
JWT="eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzdWIiOiIxMjM0NTY3ODkwIiwibmFtZSI6IkpvaG4gRG9lIiwiaWF0IjoxNTE2MjM5MDIyfQ.SflKxwRJSMeKKF2QT4fwpMeJf36POk6yJV_adQssw5c"
# Decode header
echo "$JWT" | cut -d. -f1 | base64 -d 2>/dev/null | jq .
# Output: {"alg":"HS256","typ":"JWT"}
# Decode payload
echo "$JWT" | cut -d. -f2 | base64 -d 2>/dev/null | jq .
# Output: {"sub":"1234567890","name":"John Doe","iat":1516239022}
# Using jwt_tool for comprehensive analysis
python3 jwt_tool.py "$JWT"
# Check for sensitive data in the payload:
# - PII (email, phone, address)
# - Internal IDs or database references
# - Role/permission claims
# - Expiration times (exp, nbf, iat)
# - Issuer (iss) and audience (aud)
```

### Step 2: Test Algorithm None Attack

Attempt to forge tokens by setting the algorithm to "none".

```bash
````
