# testing-in-production

A skill for testing during rollout: feature flags, canary analysis, progressive rollouts and guardrail metrics. Useful when a release needs to ramp instead of hitting everyone at once.

## What it does

The skill covers safe-release techniques used while a rollout is running: testing feature flags in both states, canary analysis, progressive rollouts with gates, guardrail metrics, post-deploy smoke tests and synthetic users. A Quick Route table maps situations to sections — ramping traffic from 1% to 100% with gates points to progressive rollout and `references/rollout-policy.md`.

A Discovery Questions block makes the agent ask what your project already has: a feature flag platform, the ability to deploy to a slice of traffic, monitoring maturity, production access. If `.agents/qa-project-context.md` exists, the skill reads it and skips questions already answered there. Monitoring is treated as a prerequisite, not an extra: without real-time error and latency numbers there is nothing to detect problems with.

The skill is not for scheduled probes that keep running after release — that is `synthetic-monitoring`. Designing tests from production telemetry belongs to `observability-driven-testing`. A rollback that has never been fired is called a hypothesis rather than a plan, so verifying the way back gets its own step.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill testing-in-production -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/testing-in-production/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/testing-in-production/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill testing-in-production -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/testing-in-production/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill testing-in-production -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/testing-in-production/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills testing-in-production
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/testing-in-production/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill testing-in-production -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/testing-in-production
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/testing-in-production/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill testing-in-production -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/testing-in-production/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- ship a feature behind a flag and test both states
- ramp traffic from 1% to 100% with metric gates
- set up smoke tests that catch breakage before users do
- pick the metrics that stop a rollout automatically
- prove the rollback actually works instead of assuming it

## Example prompts
- help me set up a canary deploy with metric gates
- which guardrail metrics should gate the rollout of the new checkout
- review my rollback plan: what breaks if I turn the flag off

<objective>
Production is the only environment that is production. Every other environment is an approximation — staging never replicates real data volume, traffic, or third-party quirks. This skill covers how to validate quality in production safely: controlled blast radius, automated rollback, guardrail metrics, and smoke tests that catch problems before users do. The recurring failure it prevents: shipping to 100% of users with no flag to flip, no baseline to compare against, and no tested way back.
</objective>

## Quick Route

| Situation | Go to |
|-----------|-------|
| Shipping a feature behind a flag | Feature Flag Testing |
| Ramping traffic 1% → 100% with gates | Progressive Rollout + `references/rollout-policy.md` |
| Need post-deploy checks on every release | Production Smoke Tests + `references/patterns.md` |
| Deciding what numbers gate the rollout | Guardrail Metrics |
| New code path with no user-visible change yet | Dark Launches |
| Proving the rollback actually works | Verification |

## Discovery Questions

Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first. If it exists, use it as context and skip questions already answered there.

**Feature flag system:**
- Do you have a feature flag platform? (LaunchDarkly, Statsig — now part of OpenAI, GrowthBook, Unleash, Flagsmith, Harness FME — formerly Split, custom, none)
- How are flags managed? (Dashboard, config file, environment variables)
- Can flags target specific users, percentages, or segments?
- How many active flags exist today? Is there a cleanup process?

**Rollout capability:**
- Can you deploy to a subset of traffic? (Canary infrastructure, weighted routing, feature flags)
```
