## What it does

The skill lays out a workflow for testing reflected, stored and DOM-based XSS with Burp Suite. Your agent gets an ordered set of steps: configure the proxy and crawl the app, find reflection points in Repeater, pick a payload for the context, run a payload list through Intruder, hunt unsafe sinks with DOM Invader.

It ships concrete request and payload examples for HTML body, attribute, JavaScript string, event handler and SVG contexts. A separate section covers filter and CSP bypass: case variation, null bytes, double encoding, HTML entities, plus the Hackvertor extension from the BApp Store. The last step is confirming exploitability and writing up the attack chain.

You need Burp Suite Professional with an active scanner, a browser with the Burp CA certificate installed, and FoxyProxy pointed at `127.0.0.1:8080`. Written authorization for the target app is the other prerequisite — without it the Intruder steps stop being a test and become an attack on someone else's service.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --path skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/testing-for-xss-vulnerabilities-with-burpsuite/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find where user input is reflected in request parameters
- craft a payload for a specific reflection context
- run an XSS payload list across form fields with Intruder
- spot unsafe sinks like `innerHTML` and `document.write`
- work around input filters and CSP directives

## Example prompts
- Set up Burp and crawl the app for XSS, start with the site map
- Check the q parameter for reflected XSS and pick a payload for the context
- Run the payload list through Intruder on the comment field and flag reflections

# Testing for XSS Vulnerabilities with Burp Suite

## When to Use

- During authorized web application penetration testing to find reflected, stored, and DOM-based XSS
- When validating XSS findings reported by automated vulnerability scanners
- For testing the effectiveness of Content Security Policy (CSP) and XSS filters
- When assessing client-side security of single-page applications (SPAs)
- During bug bounty programs targeting XSS vulnerabilities

## Prerequisites

- **Authorization**: Written scope and rules of engagement for the target application
- **Burp Suite Professional**: Licensed version with active scanner capabilities
- **Browser**: Firefox or Chromium with Burp CA certificate installed
- **FoxyProxy**: Browser extension configured to route traffic through Burp proxy (127.0.0.1:8080)
- **Target application**: Authenticated access with valid test credentials
- **XSS payloads list**: Custom wordlist or Burp's built-in XSS payload set

## Workflow

### Step 1: Configure Burp Suite and Map the Application

Set up the proxy and crawl the application to discover all input vectors.

```
# Burp Suite Configuration
1. Proxy > Options > Proxy Listeners: 127.0.0.1:8080
2. Target > Scope: Add target domain (e.g., *.target.example.com)
3. Dashboard > New Scan > Crawl only > Select target URL
4. Enable "Passive scanning" in Dashboard settings
# Browser Setup
- Install Burp CA: http://burpsuite → CA Certificate
- Import certificate into browser trust store
