# testing-dags

Runs an Airflow DAG, waits for it to finish, and digs into the logs when it fails. Built for test-debug-fix loops.

## What it does

The skill drives a loop: run, fail, fix, run again. Its first move is `af runs trigger-wait <dag_id>` — one command that triggers the run and watches it. Pre-flight checks like `af dags list` or `af dags get` are explicitly skipped. Just trigger, then diagnose.

On failure, `af runs diagnose <dag_id> <dag_run_id>` returns run metadata, every task instance state, and the failed tasks. Then `af tasks logs <dag_id> <dag_run_id> <task_id>` surfaces stack traces, connection errors, and timeouts; add `--try 2` for a specific retry. If the DAG never loaded at all, `af dags errors` catches syntax problems and missing dependencies.

The `af` commands need to be on PATH. Easiest route is running through `astro otto`, or installing standalone with `uv tool install astro-airflow-mcp`. For quick feedback without a live Airflow instance, `astro dev parse` and `astro dev pytest` work if the Astro CLI is around. Without a working Airflow connection the loop stalls on the very first command, so check `af config connections` before you start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill testing-dags -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/testing-dags/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/testing-dags/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill testing-dags -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/testing-dags/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill testing-dags -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/testing-dags/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install astronomer/agents testing-dags
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/testing-dags/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill testing-dags -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/astronomer/agents --path skills/testing-dags
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/testing-dags/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill testing-dags -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/astronomer/agents/tree/HEAD/skills/testing-dags/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- run a DAG and wait for the result in one command
- find the failed task among dozens of others
- pull a stack trace from a specific retry attempt
- tell a DAG parse error apart from a task failure
- fix the file and rerun without rebuilding the command

## Example prompts
- test this dag and fix it if it fails
- run the pipeline and troubleshoot issues
- run my_dag and show why extract_data failed

description: Complex DAG testing workflows with debugging and fixing cycles. Use for multi-step testing requests like "test this dag and fix it if it fails", "test and debug", "run the pipeline and troubleshoot issues". For simple test requests ("test dag", "run dag"), the airflow entrypoint skill handles it directly. This skill is for iterative test-debug-fix cycles.

# DAG Testing Skill

Use `af` commands to test, debug, and fix DAGs in iterative cycles.

## Running the CLI

These commands assume `af` is on PATH. Run via `astro otto` to get it automatically, or install standalone with `uv tool install astro-airflow-mcp`.

---

## Quick Validation with Astro CLI

If the user has the Astro CLI available, these commands provide fast feedback without needing a running Airflow instance:

```bash
# Parse DAGs to catch import errors, syntax issues, and DAG-level problems
astro dev parse
# Run pytest against DAGs (runs tests in tests/ directory)
astro dev pytest
```

Use these for quick validation during development. For full end-to-end testing against a live Airflow instance, continue to the trigger-and-wait workflow below.

---

## FIRST ACTION: Just Trigger the DAG

When the user asks to test a DAG, your **FIRST AND ONLY action** should be:

```bash
af runs trigger-wait <dag_id>
```

**DO NOT:**
- Call `af dags list` first
- Call `af dags get` first
- Call `af dags errors` first
- Use `grep` or `ls` or any other bash command
- Do any "pre-flight checks"

**Just trigger the DAG.** If it fails, THEN debug.
