## What it does

The skill turns an agent into a step-by-step API tester. It starts by mapping the surface: pulling an OpenAPI or Swagger spec, fuzzing paths with `ffuf`, probing API versions, and hunting GraphQL endpoints at common paths. Then it works down the OWASP list — BOLA, broken authentication, excessive object properties, rate limits, and access to sensitive flows.

Every step ships as runnable commands. Swapping IDs while holding another user's token, decoding JWTs and trying the `alg: none` trick, mass assignment through `PUT` and `PATCH`, scanning responses for password hashes and internal flags. Login brute force with a throttled rate shows whether lockout exists at all, and a nested GraphQL query tests query depth handling.

You need a written scope document and access to the API itself. Tooling: Burp Suite Professional, Postman, `ffuf`, `curl` or `httpie`, and `jq` (installed with `apt install jq`). Running these probes without authorization turns a test into an attack, so settle that first.

## Requirements
- Works with: Postman

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --path skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/testing-api-security-with-owasp-top-10/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check whether the API leaks other users' objects when IDs are swapped
- find endpoints that skip authentication
- catch password hashes and internal flags in responses
- verify that login rate limiting actually triggers
- see how GraphQL handles deeply nested queries

## Example prompts
- Map the API at `https://api.target.example.com` and list every path in the spec
- Test `/api/v1/users/101` for BOLA — I hold user A's token, try to read user B's data
- Run the rate-limit check on `/api/v1/auth/login` and tell me at which attempt the 429 appears

# Testing API Security with OWASP Top 10

## When to Use

- During authorized API penetration testing engagements
- When assessing REST, GraphQL, or gRPC APIs for security vulnerabilities
- Before deploying new API endpoints to production environments
- When reviewing API security posture against the OWASP API Security Top 10 (2023)
- For validating API gateway security controls and rate limiting effectiveness

## Prerequisites

- **Authorization**: Written scope document covering all API endpoints to be tested
- **Burp Suite Professional**: For intercepting and modifying API requests
- **Postman**: For organizing and executing API test collections
- **ffuf**: For API endpoint and parameter fuzzing
- **curl/httpie**: Command-line HTTP clients for manual testing
- **API documentation**: Swagger/OpenAPI spec, GraphQL schema, or API docs
- **jq**: JSON processor for parsing API responses (`apt install jq`)

## Workflow

### Step 1: Discover and Map API Endpoints

Enumerate all available API endpoints and understand the API surface.

```bash
# If OpenAPI/Swagger spec is available, download it
curl -s "https://api.target.example.com/swagger.json" | jq '.paths | keys[]'
curl -s "https://api.target.example.com/v2/api-docs" | jq '.paths | keys[]'
curl -s "https://api.target.example.com/openapi.yaml"
# Fuzz for API endpoints
The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 3431c341c0c0d0e6 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
