# test-value-evidence

Checks that the tests for a specific PR, commit or feature actually catch the wrong behaviour, with red-green evidence tied to a revision.

## What it does

The skill works on one identified change: a PR, a commit, a feature, or an edit to the tests themselves. It asks whether the tests for that change prove anything. First it binds the contract to a revision. A PR gets its merge base and head SHA; uncommitted work gets a base SHA plus a reproducible patch hash. Each behaviour change then maps along a chain: requirement, input sequence, expected public outcome, production entry point, named test case, and the assertion that separates right from wrong. Expected outcomes come from the requirements or the API semantics, not from whatever the test currently returns.

The proof is a counterfactual. For a bug fix, put the real pre-fix defect back with the same regression test: it must fail for that defect and pass once the fix returns. For a new feature, disable or corrupt the behaviour while keeping the build alive. A missing-symbol compiler error proves nothing behavioural. Paired runs happen only in an authorised environment, inside an owned isolated checkout, with separate build caches. Stale outputs or a runner's success exit code on their own void the evidence, and counts you cannot read are reported as unknown.

The boundary is sharp. Without an identified change the skill reports missing scope instead of grading the whole repository. A review request alone does not permit source edits or builds. General blind spots in an existing suite, per-test quality grades and coverage belong to sibling skills, not this one.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-value-evidence -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-value-evidence/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-value-evidence/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-value-evidence -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-value-evidence/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-value-evidence -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-value-evidence/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills test-value-evidence
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-value-evidence/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-value-evidence -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test/skills/test-value-evidence
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-value-evidence/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-value-evidence -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-test/skills/test-value-evidence/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- prove a regression test fails on the real pre-fix defect
- tie red-green evidence to a merge base or patch hash
- separate a genuine red run from setup failures and flakes
- pick a buildable counterfactual for a new feature
- keep a read-only review from turning into source edits

## Example prompts
- Check the regression test in this PR: show it fails on the pre-fix defect and passes after the fix.
- Pick a counterfactual for this feature: disable the behaviour while keeping the build green, then rerun the same test.
- Collect red-green evidence for this commit and attach the merge base, head SHA and selected/failed test counts.

# Test-value evidence

A passing test proves little unless it detects the relevant wrong behavior.
Assess the changed contracts and their directly related tests, not the entire
repository. Discover and follow the repository's instructions, pinned toolchain,
test commands, assertion conventions, and execution permissions. This skill
does not authorize edits in a read-only review, execution of untrusted code,
workflow dispatch, publication, or access to another session's checkout.

## Inputs and boundaries

Discover the requested diff/revision, production entry points, tests, fixtures,
and available execution artifacts. If the change cannot be identified, report
the missing scope instead of grading the workspace. Existing unchanged tests
can suffice; a source-only diff is not automatically untested.

Use `test-gap-analysis` for general existing-suite blind spots, `grade-tests`
for curated per-test readiness/quality, and existing repository mutation tooling
for mutation campaigns. Do not start a second mutation engine or require
full-suite mutation testing for every change. This skill is self-contained:
sibling skills are optional routing destinations, not required dependencies.

## Workflow

1. **Bind the contract to the tested revision.** For a PR, record its merge
   base and exact head SHA. For a commit, record the selected parent and commit;
   identify the parent explicitly for a merge commit. For uncommitted work,
   record the base SHA plus a reproducible patch identity (saved patch/hash,
