# test-suite-curation

Audits a whole regression suite: finds duplicates, dead and flaky tests, splits it into smoke/core/extended. Deletion needs quarantine and human sign-off.

## What it does

The skill treats tests as a corpus, not one at a time. It builds a coverage fingerprint per test, clusters near-duplicates by AST, and mines CI history for tests that never fail and tests that always do. Then it sorts each one: redundant, obsolete, low-value, or keep.

The core idea it drills in: equal coverage is not redundancy. Two tests can hit the same lines while asserting completely different things — different oracles, inputs, edge cases. Coverage tells you what code ran, never what was checked. The only proof that one test subsumes another is mutation testing.

Deletion counts as a destructive change here. First quarantine: mark the test skip or xfail, or move it to a deprecated suite, watch it for an agreed window, track escaped defects. Only then delete, with a named approver and a record of what went and why. Check upfront whether CI result history exists — without it you are left with coverage and clustering alone. On pytest you need `--cov-context=test`, otherwise there is no way to see which test covered which line.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-suite-curation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-suite-curation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-suite-curation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-suite-curation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-suite-curation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-suite-curation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-suite-curation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills test-suite-curation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-suite-curation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-suite-curation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/test-suite-curation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-suite-curation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-suite-curation -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- find tests that duplicate each other by coverage
- clear out tests that have never failed
- split a flat suite into smoke, core and extended
- produce a defensible record of what was deleted and why
- tell an obsolete test apart from a redundant one

## Example prompts
- audit the regression suite and show me which tests we can delete
- find duplicate tests and suggest what to keep
- restructure the suite into smoke, core and extended by risk

  Audit a whole regression suite and prune/restructure it with evidence: per-test
  coverage fingerprinting, AST near-duplicate clustering, CI-history mining for
  never-failing and flaky tests, prune decision rules (redundant/obsolete/low-value/keep),
  smoke/core/extended tiering by risk and defect-detection history, and a defensible
  "what we deleted and why" record. Deletion is destructive — quarantine and human
  sign-off are mandatory. Use when: "audit the test suite," "prune redundant tests,"
  "find duplicate tests," "which tests can we delete," "restructure into smoke/core/extended,"
  "is this test pulling its weight," "shrink the regression suite."
  Not for: Judging whether an individual test is WELL-WRITTEN (smells, assertions) — that
  is ai-qa-review. Healing one flaky test at runtime — that is test-reliability. Bulk
  selector regeneration after a UI refactor — that is selector-drift-recovery.

<objective>
Test A and Test B cover the exact same lines, so a tired engineer deletes B — and three weeks later a production defect slips through because B was the only test that asserted the rounding was correct. Coverage equality is not redundancy. This skill audits an entire regression suite as a corpus (the redundancy analysis no human does by hand), prunes it on evidence rather than vibes, and treats every deletion as a destructive change that requires a quarantine grace period, human sign-off, and a record you can defend to an auditor.
</objective>
