# test-slack-app

Walks you through a hands-on check of a Slack app: starts it with slack run in a sandbox and tells you what to click so you can confirm it responds.

## What it does

This skill covers the final step of building a Slack app. There is no automated test suite here. Instead the agent sets things up and hands you a concrete list of things to type or click, then you report back what you saw.

Before any clicking, it runs the CLI's own checks. `slack doctor` looks at the CLI, the language runtime and authentication; `slack manifest validate` from the project directory confirms the app config is well-formed. Then the skill reads your listener code and names what the app actually registers: slash commands, shortcuts, subscribed events, interactive actions, modal submissions, App Home, assistant surfaces. Testing happens in a developer sandbox, or in a Free Team you created for the purpose. A workspace where real coworkers sit is off limits — the CLI cannot tell the three apart, so you have to confirm the target yourself.

The smoothest path is a CLI-managed app. Plain Bolt apps started with `node` or `python` get a best-effort route: point the app at the test workspace with its bot and app-level tokens, prefer socket mode so no public URL is needed, then start it with its own command. Socket mode only delivers events if the app was coded for it and the app-level token carries `connections:write`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Slack

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add slackapi/slack-skills-plugin --skill test-slack-app -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-slack-app/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-slack-app/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add slackapi/slack-skills-plugin --skill test-slack-app -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-slack-app/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add slackapi/slack-skills-plugin --skill test-slack-app -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-slack-app/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install slackapi/slack-skills-plugin test-slack-app
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-slack-app/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add slackapi/slack-skills-plugin --skill test-slack-app -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/slackapi/slack-skills-plugin --path skills/test-slack-app
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-slack-app/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add slackapi/slack-skills-plugin --skill test-slack-app -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/slackapi/slack-skills-plugin/tree/HEAD/skills/test-slack-app/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- start a Slack app locally and see it answer
- exercise slash commands and shortcuts before shipping
- catch a malformed manifest before manual testing
- test events and actions in a sandbox instead of a shared workspace
- map out what an app registers by reading its source

## Example prompts
- Test my Slack app: run it and tell me what to click in Slack
- Run `slack doctor` and `slack manifest validate` before we test
- List what this app listens for and give me steps to verify each one

name: test-slack-app
description: Use when a developer wants to test, try out, smoke-test, verify, or confirm that a Slack app built with the Slack CLI (or a plain Bolt app) actually works, by running it in a developer sandbox or a Free Team, never a workspace with real users, with `slack run` and exercising its real slash commands, shortcuts, events, actions, modals, App Home, and assistant surfaces. Also covers `slack doctor` and `slack manifest validate` health checks before hands-on testing.

# Test Slack App

Help a developer confirm that a Slack app they already built actually works. This is the last step of the build loop, after the `slack:create-slack-app` skill scaffolds an app and the `slack:slack-cli` skill runs it.

The approach is simple and safe:

1. **Run the app in a developer sandbox or a Free Team:** a sandbox for preference, or a Free Team the developer created for this. Never a workspace with real coworkers in it.
2. **Read the app's source** to learn what it actually listens for.
3. **Hand the developer concrete steps** to perform in Slack, then help them confirm the app responds.

This is guided manual checking, not an automated test suite: you drive the setup and tell the developer what to type or click, and they confirm what they see. It works best for apps managed by the Slack CLI; there is a best-effort path for plain Bolt apps in Step 2.

## Step 1: Set Up a Safe Place to Test

### 1a. Detect the Slack CLI

Use the `slack:slack-cli` skill (**Step 1: Detect the Slack CLI**) to check whether the public Slack CLI is installed and resolve its command name. The fingerprint check, alias fallback, and install instructions all live there; do not duplicate them here. Refer to the resolved command as `SLACK_CMD` throughout. If the CLI is not installed, guide the developer through that same step to install it, since running the app needs it.

### 1b. Make sure there is a safe workspace to test in

Testing belongs in a workspace nobody is working in: a developer sandbox for preference, or a Free Team the developer created for this. Never a workspace with real coworkers in it.
