# test-reliability

Classifies flakes by root cause, heals broken locators and stale data, quarantines unstable tests. Every auto-repair leaves evidence with a confidence score.

## What it does

The skill handles one test at a time, at runtime. It sorts a flake into a category — timing, locator, data, environment — because a timing fix and a data-dependency fix have nothing in common. Then it repairs: multi-attribute locators instead of fallback chains, DOM neighbour context to find an element whose attributes changed, data healing when a 401/404/429 shows up mid-test.

Selectors get a stability score from 0 to 5, with a suite target of 3.5 average. The skill suggests a monthly audit and fixing score-0 and score-1 selectors first. Quarantine isolates a flaky test without blocking CI. Automated repairs go through a review gate and leave a trail: what broke, what was tried, what worked.

Bulk selector rewriting after a planned UI refactor is out of scope — that is `selector-drift-recovery`, which rewrites many tests offline. Clustering CI failures into bug reports belongs to `ai-bug-triage`. Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first; if it already lists known flaky areas and your selector strategy, some of the discovery questions are answered.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-reliability -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-reliability/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-reliability/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-reliability -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-reliability/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-reliability -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-reliability/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills test-reliability
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-reliability/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-reliability -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/test-reliability
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-reliability/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-reliability -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/test-reliability/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find out why a test fails only in CI
- swap a brittle locator for a resilient one
- tell an app bug apart from an environment issue
- isolate a flaky test without stalling the pipeline
- recover from a 401 or 429 caused by stale test data

## Example prompts
- This test flakes in CI, work out the root cause
- The locator broke after a markup change, find a resilient replacement
- Quarantine the unstable test and show me the repair report

<objective>
A retried test that still flakes will eventually fail 3-of-3 during your most critical release, and a silently auto-repaired test may now verify a different element entirely. This skill builds suites teams can trust: resilient locators, classified flakes, environment-aware healing, data healing, and observable repair with confidence scoring — every automated fix produces evidence a human can review.
</objective>

## Quick Route

| Situation | Go to |
|-----------|-------|
| Test flakes in CI, root cause unknown | Flake Classification → decision tree |
| Locator broke, want resilient replacement | Locator Resilience |
| Action fails, suspect slow backend not UI bug | Environment-Aware Healing |
| 401/404/429 mid-test from stale data | Data Healing |
| Want auto-repair with review gate | Observable Repair Workflow |
| Isolate a flaky test without blocking CI | Quarantine Management |
| Step-by-step triage of one flaky test | `references/flaky-test-runbook.md` |

## Discovery Questions

Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first — it carries known flaky areas, selector strategy, and CI environment details. Skip any question it already answers.

- **What is your current flaky test rate?** Check CI failure stats over the last 30 days. Below 2% is healthy; 2-5% needs attention; above 5% is eroding team trust.
- **Where is the pain concentrated?** Locator breakage? Timing? Test data? Environment? If unknown, instrument first (see Flake Classification).
- **What is your current selector strategy?** data-testid everywhere, mixed CSS and role-based, or no strategy (whatever works)? This sets the stability-score baseline.
