# test-quality-inspector

Inspects test suites for empty assertions and missing edge cases. It guides your coding agent to verify persistence, negative paths, and input validation.

## What it does

This skill equips your coding assistant with guidelines for QA-level test reviews. Instead of settling for simple execution checks, it spots trivial assertions like `assert user` or `assert result` that stay green even when objects contain malformed data.

The framework includes inspection checklists (`inspection-checklist.md`), assertion criteria (`assertion-quality.md`), and red-flag catalogs (`red-flags.md`). It systematically flags missing negative checks, lack of persistence verification, and tests that accidentally depend on previous test execution.

Because the configuration sets `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, it functions as an internal reference for the assistant during code review rather than a manual command.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill test-quality-inspector -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-quality-inspector/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-quality-inspector/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill test-quality-inspector -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-quality-inspector/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill test-quality-inspector -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-quality-inspector/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills test-quality-inspector
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-quality-inspector/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill test-quality-inspector -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path universal/testing/test-quality-inspector
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-quality-inspector/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill test-quality-inspector -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/universal/testing/test-quality-inspector/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch trivial assertions that pass on invalid data
- identify missing negative test cases and validation checks
- verify database persistence and rollback handling in test suites
- decouple interdependent tests using isolated fixtures

## Example prompts
- Review `tests/test_auth.py` for weak assertions and missing edge cases.
- Inspect our user registration tests and suggest missing validation scenarios.

# Example Test Inspection Report

## Scenario: User Registration Feature

### Engineer's Test Suite

```python
# test_user_registration.py
def test_user_creation():
    """Test user creation"""
    user = create_user("test@example.com", "password123")
    assert user
def test_login():
    """Test login"""
    user = create_user("test@example.com", "password123")
    result = login("test@example.com", "password123")
    assert result
def test_duplicate_email():
    """Test duplicate email"""
    create_user("test@example.com", "password123")
    user2 = create_user("test@example.com", "password456")
    assert user2
```

---

## QA Inspection Report

### Test 1: test_user_creation()

**Claimed Intent:** Test user creation
**Actually Tests:** Object instantiation only

#### Issues Found

🔴 **CRITICAL: Worthless Assertion**
```python
assert user  # Line 5
```
- Would pass with corrupt data
- Would pass with wrong email
- Would pass with invalid password hash
- Would pass if database save failed

**Mental Debug:** User object with garbage data would pass this test.

🟠 **HIGH: Missing Validation Tests**
- No test for invalid email format
- No test for weak password
- No test for duplicate email (separate test exists but broken)
- No test for SQL injection in email

🟠 **HIGH: No Persistence Verification**
- Test doesn't verify user is saved to database
- Test doesn't verify user can be retrieved
- Transaction might be rolled back

🟡 **MEDIUM: Vague Test Name**
- "test_user_creation" doesn't describe what should happen
- Better: "test_user_creation_with_valid_data_persists_to_database"

#### Suggested Improvements

```python
def test_user_creation_with_valid_data_persists_to_database():
    """Creating a user with valid email and password should:
    1. Create user object with correct attributes
    2. Save to database
    3. Hash password (not store plaintext)
    4. Set default role and active status
    """
    email = "test@example.com"
    password = "SecurePass123!"
    user = create_user(email, password)
    # Verify user object
