## What it does

The skill runs a migration in six phases: audit the old suite and rank tests by priority, install the target framework alongside it, move shared infrastructure first (page objects, auth helpers, data factories), then port tests one at a time. Both suites run in CI in parallel until the new one proves coverage parity. Old tests get tagged as migrated rather than deleted, and the legacy suite is only decommissioned after a sprint of clean parallel runs.

A routing table picks the first-pass tooling per path. Jest→Vitest gets a `jest.` to `vi.` replacement pass, Mocha→Vitest a chai-matcher codemod, while Selenium→Playwright and Protractor→Playwright are hand-written because the skill does not trust codemods there. It also covers capturing `storageState` so ported tests skip the login flow, and flags auth flows as the usual spot for silent breakage.

One thing to plan for: running two suites side by side doubles CI cost for a while. The skill is blunt that migrating a flaky test just reproduces the flakiness in the new framework. It is the wrong tool for bulk selector regeneration after a UI refactor on the same framework, or for healing a single flaky test at runtime.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-migration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-migration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-migration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-migration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-migration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-migration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-migration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills test-migration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-migration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-migration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/test-migration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-migration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-migration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- port a Selenium suite to Playwright without dropping coverage
- convert Jest unit tests to Vitest and verify the result
- run old and new suites in CI in parallel until parity
- move page objects and auth helpers to the new framework before the tests
- decide which tests are not worth migrating at all

## Example prompts
- migrate my Cypress tests to Playwright, start with the audit
- give me a phased plan for moving Jest to Vitest
- set up a parallel CI run for the old and new suites

  Migrate a test suite from one framework to another, incrementally and without losing coverage.
  Covers Selenium→Playwright, Cypress→Playwright, Jest→Vitest, Mocha→Vitest, and Protractor→Playwright,
  with parallel CI running, locator/assertion translation, and a coverage-parity track.
  Use when: "migrate tests," "switch framework," "Selenium to Playwright," "Jest to Vitest," "framework migration."
  Not for: bulk selector regeneration after a UI refactor on the SAME framework — use selector-drift-recovery.
  Not for: healing one flaky test at runtime — use test-reliability. Not for: modernizing patterns without changing framework — use ai-qa-review.

<objective>
A framework migration is where coverage quietly leaks: twenty old tests become fifteen new ones, a flaky Selenium test is faithfully reproduced as a flaky Playwright test, and the old safety-net suite gets deleted a sprint too early. This skill migrates incrementally with both suites running in CI until parity is proven — so the new suite earns the decommission, you don't just assert it.
</objective>

## Quick Route

| You're going from → to | Jump to | First-pass tooling |
|------------------------|---------|--------------------|
| Selenium → Playwright | Translation Patterns + `references/framework-guides.md` | hand-write; no codemod worth trusting |
| Cypress → Playwright | Translation Patterns + `references/framework-guides.md` | cy2pw web converter / community CLI (see tooling table); hand-write from the golden reference when no new dependency or interactive tool is allowed, and for fewer than about twenty tests, where it is faster anyway |
| Protractor → Playwright | `references/framework-guides.md` (urgent — EOL 2023) | hand-write; map `by.model`/`by.binding` |
| Jest → Vitest | `references/framework-guides.md` | `jest.`→`vi.` sed pass, then verify |
| Mocha → Vitest | `references/framework-guides.md` | chai-matcher codemod, then verify |
| Any path, 100+ tests | Migration Workflow + Parallel Running Strategy | always parallel-run in CI |
