# test-harness

A skill that tests the Claude harness: hooks, skills, agents, settings and CLAUDE.md. It picks the right test tier and writes the test.

## What it does

The skill works with the vigiles library and offers three test tiers, cheapest first. The unit tier checks pure hook logic: does the hook block or allow an event, for every event type. The deterministic tier runs the real `claude` CLI against a scripted mock and answers whether a hook is wired into the assembled plugin and whether injected context reached the model. The eval tier runs a real model and costs money.

The guiding rule: start at the cheapest tier that can answer your question, and climb only when it genuinely can't. Two of the three tiers need no model and no API key, so they run on every commit. When both the unit and deterministic tiers can answer, the skill says prefer unit: it's faster and reaches events the mock can't drive.

You need `vigiles` as a dev dependency. The deterministic tier also needs the `claude` CLI on PATH, no API key required; the eval tier needs model auth. One trap worth knowing: a trigger rate of 0% on every prompt is a wiring bug until proven otherwise, not a verdict on your description. Three setup mistakes produce it — a bare id where the namespaced `<plugin>:<skill>` is required, `pluginDir` where a loose `.claude/skills` needs `skillsDir`, and a missing `fixture`. Rule all three out first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zernie/vigiles --skill test-harness -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-harness/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-harness/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zernie/vigiles --skill test-harness -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-harness/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zernie/vigiles --skill test-harness -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-harness/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zernie/vigiles test-harness
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-harness/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zernie/vigiles --skill test-harness -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zernie/vigiles --path skills/test-harness
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-harness/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zernie/vigiles --skill test-harness -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- check that a hook blocks or allows an event
- confirm a hook is wired into the assembled plugin and fires in a real session
- verify that injected context actually reached the model
- measure whether a skill description triggers on the right prompts and stays quiet on others
- see which tools a run called and whether it stayed inside `allowed-tools`

## Example prompts
- test my PreToolUse hook for blocking with vigiles
- write a test that the SessionStart hook delivers context to the model
- check that the skill triggers on the right prompts and not on irrelevant ones

name: test-harness
allowed-tools: Read, Edit, Write, Glob, Grep, Bash
description: Install vigiles and test a Claude Code harness — hooks, skills, agents, settings, CLAUDE.md — by picking the right tier (unit / deterministic / eval) and writing a test that passes. Use to check that a hook fires or blocks, that a skill triggers, that injected context lands; or to observe a run — which tools it called, whether it stayed inside its declared allowed-tools, what files and side effects it produced, how to intercept a call without executing it.

Test the Claude Code **harness** — the hooks, skills, settings, and CLAUDE.md that
steer an agent — as the assembled machine it ships as. vigiles gives three tiers,
cheapest first; this skill picks the right one, writes the test, and runs it.

The guiding rule: **start at the cheapest tier that can answer the question, and
climb only when it genuinely can't.** Two of the three tiers need no model and no
API key, so they run on every commit for free — reach for the paid real-model
tier only when the question actually requires a real model.

## Step 0 — Pick the tier (the judgment call)

Match what you're testing to the cheapest tier that can answer it:

| What you're testing                                                                                                                    | Tier              | Cost                                             | API                                                                                           |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| "Does this hook block/allow event X?" — pure hook logic, **every** event type (incl. Edit/Write, PreCompact, SessionEnd, SubagentStop) | **Unit** | free, milliseconds, no `claude` | `runHook` |
| "Is the hook actually **wired into** the assembled plugin and does it fire in a real session?" | **Deterministic** | free, no API key (real `claude` + scripted mock) | `runHarnessTest` + `scriptModel` |
```
