## What it does

This skill guides test data architecture with isolated factories and reproducible seed values. Each test must own its data. For dynamic records, it relies on Fishery (2.4.0) in TypeScript, FactoryBot (6.6.0) in Ruby, and factory-boy (3.3.3) in Python paired with faker (v10.4.0). Without third-party libraries, it builds a plain forty-line generator with a PRNG like mulberry32.

Copying production data into staging without masking breaches GDPR or HIPAA rules. The skill provides anonymization steps to swap out sensitive details while keeping database relationships intact. It will not handle database migration checks: for schema integrity, use the database-testing skill instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-data-management -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-data-management/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-data-management/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-data-management -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-data-management/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-data-management -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-data-management/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills test-data-management
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-data-management/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-data-management -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/test-data-management
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-data-management/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill test-data-management -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- set up entity factories with Fishery or FactoryBot
- anonymize production database dumps under GDPR constraints
- generate deterministic test attributes using seeded faker
- isolate data creation and cleanup across parallel test runs

## Example prompts
- Configure a Fishery user factory with sequential emails and deterministic UUIDs
- Create a PII anonymization script for customer records while preserving foreign keys
- Add a factory-boy order factory in Python with an out_of_stock trait

  Create and manage test data with factory patterns, fixture strategies, data
  anonymization, and synthetic data generation. Covers Fishery (TypeScript),
  FactoryBot (Ruby), Factory Boy (Python), database seeding, cleanup strategies,
  and GDPR-compliant data handling. Use when: "test data," "fixtures," "factories,"
  "seed data," "synthetic data," "test database," "data anonymization."
  Not for: migration/integrity testing of the DB itself — use database-testing;
  environment provisioning and database branching strategy — use test-environments.

<objective>
Create, maintain, and clean up test data that is deterministic, isolated, realistic, and safe. Good test data is the foundation of reliable tests -- without it, tests are either flaky (shared mutable state), unrealistic (hardcoded nonsense values), or dangerous (production PII in test environments). This skill delivers factories, fixtures, idempotent seeds, anonymization pipelines, and cleanup strategies that survive parallel execution.

## Discovery Questions

Before designing a test data strategy, understand the current state. Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first -- if it exists and is filled in, use it as the foundation and skip questions already answered there; an unfilled template answers nothing, so treat it as absent.

### Current Data Practices
- How is test data created today? (manually, scripts, copy of production, none)
- Do tests share data or does each test create its own?
- How is test data cleaned up? (truncate, rollback, manual, never)
- Are there seed scripts? Are they idempotent?

### Privacy and Compliance
- Does the product handle PII? (names, emails, addresses, phone numbers, SSNs)
- Are there GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, or other data protection requirements?
- Is production data ever used in test environments?

### Scale and Complexity
- How large are the test datasets? (dozens of records, thousands, millions)
- How complex are the data relationships? (simple CRUD, deep nested hierarchies, polymorphic)
