# test-anti-patterns

Scans test files for anti-patterns: assertions that verify nothing, swallowed exceptions, order-dependent tests, magic values. Works across languages, ranks findings by severity.

## What it does

The skill analyzes a test file or suite to spot reliability threats: tests that don't actually check anything, tautological assertions, overly broad exception handlers, tests that break if run out of order or when timing shifts. Each finding comes with a severity level and explanation.

Polyglot support covers C#, Python, Go, Ruby, JavaScript, Java, C++, PowerShell and more. If the project includes language-specific extensions in `test-analysis-extensions`, the skill loads them automatically; otherwise it uses built-in heuristics.

Not designed to rewrite tests, run them, or collect coverage—other skills handle that. For broader mutation analysis or formal test classification, check related tools.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-anti-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/test-anti-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/test-anti-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-anti-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/test-anti-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-anti-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/test-anti-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills test-anti-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/test-anti-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-anti-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test/skills/test-anti-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/test-anti-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill test-anti-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- spot tests that don't verify anything
- detect swallowed or overly broad exception handlers
- find order-dependent and flaky tests
- catch magic numbers and duplication in test suites
- assess test reliability before investing in fixes

## Example prompts
- Audit /tests/unit for anti-patterns
- Check tests/MyTests.cs for empty assertions and exception swallowing
- Scan test_suite/ for flaky and order-coupled tests

# Test Anti-Pattern Detection

Quick, pragmatic analysis of test code in any supported language for anti-patterns and quality issues that undermine test reliability, maintainability, and diagnostic value.

> **Language-specific guidance**: Read the caller-provided or runtime-listed
> `test-analysis-extensions` catalog and its matching language file when needed.
> Do not invoke the reference-only
> helper. If its files are absent, use the built-in framework rules below.

## When to Use

- User asks to review test quality or find test smells
- User wants to know why tests are flaky or unreliable
- User asks "are my tests good?" or "what's wrong with my tests?"
- User requests a test audit or test code review
- User wants diagnostic findings before deciding what to improve

## When Not to Use

- User wants to write new tests from scratch (use `code-testing`)
- User wants direct implementation fixes rather than a diagnostic review (use the relevant write/edit skill)
- User asks to fix swapped `Assert.AreEqual` argument order in MSTest (use `writing-mstest-tests`)
- User asks to convert MSTest `DynamicData` from `IEnumerable<object[]>` to `ValueTuple` (use `writing-mstest-tests`)
- User wants to run or execute tests (use `run-tests` for .NET)
- User wants to migrate between test frameworks or versions (use migration skills)
- User wants raw .NET coverage collection (use `run-tests`), non-.NET coverage collection or analysis (use native tooling), project-wide .NET coverage/CRAP metrics (use `coverage-analysis`), or named-target .NET CRAP (use `crap-score`)
- User asks whether tests would catch a bug or wants behavioral/pseudo-mutation gaps (use `test-gap-analysis`)
- User wants test-mix or happy-vs-error-path classification, standardized tagging, or trait/category distributions (use `test-tagging`)
- User wants a deep formal test smell audit with academic taxonomy and extended catalog (use `test-smell-detection`)
